Well, today was Hayli's Birthday, didn't go too good. My grandma passed away at 6:30 this morning. Tried to make it a good birthday but don't think we suceeded. I feel so bad! She says that everything is ok, but I can tell by her face that she was disappointed. I think I will give her a suprise party next week to make up for it. oh well, kind of rambling I guess. Ya know in my house, I still have the same problem. I think the biggest part of "our" problem is that there is too much competetion:( does that make since? I have 3 boys and they are all that:) BOYS!!! We have ninetendo, playstation, we have movies, vcr tapes, we have bikes coming out the wahzoo, cartoon channels exceeding saftey limits(we never get to watch a WHOLE show unless we put our foot down) trampoline basketball hoop ya name we have it and if we don't..... DONT SAY IT TO LOUD or I will by weeks end:)LOL can we say spoiled:)LOL Even with all this to do it still happens. Accidents occur when preoccupation with things happens. The fear that he won't get his things(what ever he is doing) back when he is done in the bathroom:( After many years of continually repeating, You can't play if you have an accident it has gotten better with time. Ashlie is still young:) And I know as she matures she will do just fine:) To tell ya the truth I figured I was the only one here with a preoccupation problem:) Thanks for posting that:) RO | ||

man Oh MAN you were missed:) Hopefully your ride home was uneventful:) and that the kids didn't continually ask "ARE WE THERE YET?????" The trip home is suppose to be a sigh of relief but... in my car it is the beginning of the normal.... "I'M BORED:(" That is why I travel at night:) Carry plenty of sleep vibes so the kids lids get heavy and then plop.:) The snoring gets ya after a while so you constantly have to change the channel on the radio so that the beat doesn't clash with the constant sawing:)LOL Anyway Welcome home:) I am eagerly awaiting the dolphin photos:) Tell me ya got one of the kids :) I just love to see that on t.v. but I don't know them as I do you:) Watching as the kids mature into mini adults you feel part of the family:). i also noticed potty training ashlie is 5 and is completely day trained but not night : ( we started her at age 4 but I WASNT CONSISTENT until recently when she finally got the hang of it she will still have some accidents occasionally when she gets to preoccupied usualy into Rugrats but otherwise she stays in real underwear all day long. about toddler beds ashlie was 3 before we put her in one she has always been a runner so i kept her locked up as long as possible and she would have stayed in thr crib at 3 but she shook the poor bed so much it became wobbly LOL, hugs heidi oh oh welcome back susan and shawnna | ||

Shawna :-) Sooooo nice to see you posting again. You know Ms. Queen of Posts, you were missed much ;-) WOW Steff, very cool bout Olivia and her actting debut. We don't get the Disney channel here, what show was this for??? Maybe I can get someone I know to tape it. I say get Olivia's autograph now, gonna be worth much oneday ;-) OMG you guys with the water stories, LMAO Chris pulled a good one a couple years back. I woke up and the house was sooo quite went downstairs and he was standing on a stool spraying the floor with water from the sink. OMG there must have been a couple of inches of water everywhere :O I just looked at him and said WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING??? He responded by saying "Swimming" with the biggest grin ever. SHAWNA!!! Howdy stranger!!! Now you know you have been sorely missed as well. Work and kiddos must be keeping you from us.. Hope to chat on yahoo soon with ya.. Congrats on 3rd grade michael!!! I am in LOVE with LIAM... Oh my that is the cutest smile and outfit...You remind me soo much of Olivia...:) We went to the beach again yesterday...FUN.. There was WAY WAY WAY too much seaweed in the water though so we opted to take the kiddos to the rocks to collect sandcrabs.. OLIVIA LOVED digging in the sand for em and letting em crawl all over her hands. she thought it was HYSTERICAL when we left and set em free. She could NOT believe how fast they burrowed back into the sand when we let em loose. brave child not scared of much these days.. Stella I laughed so hard at your car story. Funny now huh?? Wonder how funny it was at the time..LOLOLOL.. Going to Livs boyfriends birthday party...She is gonna miss Cody sooo much when she leaves this school. She HAS TO sit next to him on the bus. And if she is not at school Cody frets all day wondering how Liv is. They are a match made in heaven.. :) well gotta go get some work done... LET ME TELL YOU......... I have had a bad week....but it should get better now. My neighbor dug a hole in my back yard and cut through my cable line and phone line....SO I had nothing all week. I am recovering wonderfully. I feel great and the boys have been such great helpers. I think I may have to recover longer LOL. They do 80% of the housework and Joe has been cooking. My name is Susan and I've been one of the Uno Mas gang for a little over 2 years now. I am married to Terry and we have 4 children: Michael (21), Justin (14), Emily (11 Ds), and Jordan (9). We live in Cookeville Tennessee. We have one pet.....a beagle named Shiloh. ~ I'm so glad to see all the new members. You will love this site! There are so many wonderful families here, and I've found them to be supportive, informative, loving, giving, and FUN! ~ LINDA: I'm so glad to see you posting more lately! ~ Discovery Cove was fantastic!!! It really is overpriced, but SO much fun! It is only open from 9-5:30 and we got there early in order to get our money's worth! It is one of the prettiest places I've even been to......the landscaping was amazing! There are various areas to swim. Some places are COLD salt water and have beautiful fish and sting rays swimming along with you. I thought that might scare Emily (actually, I thought it might scare ME!), but it was really fun! They gave you a mask and snorkel and it was so much fun swimming along with all those fish. The bottom of the pool where the fish were was kind of "natural" with coral and other stuff....very pretty! They also had a fresh water river that was gorgeous! It was a bit like a lazy river that you see at water parks, but totally covered in greenery...sort of like you were swimming in the amazon. Some areas were up to 8 feet deep. There were areas where it was enclosed at the top and beautiful birds were inside. A GREAT lunch meal came with our admission price....way too much food! Ok.....and the BEST part was the dolphin swim. It was way better than I expected it to be. Each family was assigned a time for the dolphin swim. It was our family, a young couple, and a girl from England along with 2 trainers and our dolphin "Diego" and 2 photographers. The first thing they had us do was to get into the water at chest level (it was ICE cold!) and one by one we were told to hold out our hands (palms up) and the dolphin swam over and placed his face into our hands and we kissed him. It was so cool because he acted excited after each kiss.....swam around and jumped, REALLY cute! When the trainer explained what we were going to do, she asked who wanted to go first. EMILY raised her hand and said she wanted to kiss the dolphin first!!! I sort of cringed cause I wanted her to be able to see other swimmers do it first to get more comfortable with it. LOL She did exactly as the trainer had said and then said "I love you dolphin"! There were a lot of "awwwwwwws". We got to do several things like learning some hand motions which made the dolphin jump or turn in circles, etc. But the most fun was when we held onto his top fin and he took us for a ride! FAST! I can't tell you how fun the whole day was! The only bad part was that around 3:30, it began to storm REALLY bad! The clouds turned black, there was terrible lightning and thunder, and really high winds. So we had to go to a shelter and wait it out.......I was so frustrated cause I felt we were being cheated out of time in the water! By the time the storm was over and we were able to get back in, it was almost 5pm and they closed promptly at 5:30. Bummer! But, I am so glad we went and the kids had a blast. I really recommend it! ~ One good thing about Discovery Cove is that you get a 7 day admission to Sea World when you buy your Dolphin swim package. We took advantage of it too! We went quite a few times. There is one show with sea lions and a tiny otter that we saw over and over again. Emily absolutely loved it! Before the show starts, there is a mime dressed up in a black and white pirate outfit. He does this routine where he basically teases all the audience members as they are finding their seats. I can't begin to describe how funny he was. It was so much fun to laugh that hard....and to see the kids having that much fun! Sea World also has a great area where there are dolphins swimming around in a large pool which is enclosed by just a waist-high wall. You can lean over the wall and feed them fish or just pet them. Emily couldn't seem to get enough of that! Every evening at 9pm, they have a show called "Shamu Rocks America". We saw it 3 or 4 times! It was absolutely amazing! One night, Jordan asked if he could sit on the front row because he wanted to get drenched with water........LOL he didn't need to sit there cause that whale can drench at least 14 rows up! But we said "sure" and then Emily wanted to sit with him. I tried to remind her that she woudl get soaked and she said it was fine. The first time Shamu jumped and she got drenched, she came running to our seats mad as a wet hen! She declared that she now hated that "stupid whale". LOL The next time we went, she didn't want ANY part of sitting on the front row! ~ UNO MAS was never far from my mind while we were gone. When Emily and I were in the ocean (at Myrtle Beach) I noticed a young couple who seemed to be looking at Emily. Turns out, they have an adorable little boy with Down syndrome named Isaac (he is around 2 years old). We treaded water and talked for a while and I told them about this site. I hope they will post! (I didn't exactly have anything to write down the URL right then, so I'm hoping they'll remember and join us!). Also, at Sea World we met a handsome young guy named Ryan who is 15. He and his dad and Emily and I rode "Journey to Atlantis" together.....it is a great ride where you ride around in a boat and then plunge down this huge hill into water at the end. He is starting high school this year, and has been fully included since kindergarten. I hope his parents will post because they would be able to answer so many questions on inclusion. Really nice family! ~ Terry didn't join us in Florida until the 19th, and when he arrived he brought a stack of printed Uno Mas message board posts to update me! One day, he took the boys to ride bikes and Emily and I headed for the pool. At one point, I sat on a lounge chair and read all the posts. Emily came over and asked if she could read too, so I handed her one sheet. Her eyes immediately went to a part where (I think it was from Steff) it said "Happy Birthday Emily Pace" and she was ecstatic! She read the entire page, front and back but read the birthday message over and over. Thank you for remembering her! ~ Ok...that is probably way more vacation details than you wanted. We had a great time, but I'm glad to be home (If only I didn't have to go to work on Monday!) This was the first 2 week vacation I have taken in like 16 years! I think the kids are glad to be home too, but I know they will miss the ocean! We spent 3 days at Myrtle Beach, 2 days at Daytona Beach Shores and about an hour at Jacksonville beach (they had better seashells there than anywhere else!). For those uninitiated of you, my name is Shawna, and A LONG LONG TIME AGO, I had the title "Queen of the Posters", cuz well, I wrote the longest, longest posts of anyone...I have since handed my crown over as "real life" crowded my Internet time into an eensie weensie corner of my life.. I haven't been here for sooo long, I didn't realize just how much I missed y'all. First of all, Hi to all of you who have joined in the last six months or so. I know that you will find Unomas as much of a blessing as I have over the years. To all the "oldies"...it's so good to "come home" again. Robin, I was just rolling when I read about Chase cleaning your kitchen. Michael loves to clean as well, but he usually just has a damp rag and maybe a pail of water. I used to give him a pail of water until the time he tried to wash our electric keyboard! Anyhow, that boy is a cleaning fool...Put that to good use! Give him a little damp cloth and when he's so "high energy" get him to "wash walls"... If that just doesn't work, I am busy inventing the "Kid hook", so you will have a place to hang him, where you know where he is and what he is doing...I know, it's not that funny...but it sure sounded funny... come on, when it's me and my son, you'll laugh. For the record, as I said, my name is Shawna and my husband is Lawrence. we have four kids. Robbie is almost 18, Janine is 15, Jennifer is 12 and Michael is 10. Michael has DS. As well, we have Steven, my hubby's single business partner and his cat Sylvester living with us. Yep, we are a full crowd, I tell ya. We live in Bluffton, Alberta, and my hubby and Steven own a trucking company where they drive Vacuum and water trucks for a company on the oilrigs, as well Lawrence is setting up a mobile truck to fix air conditioning systems. I tell you, the weather here in central Alberta has been downright droughtlike this year....it's really terrible. I heard that the County is about ready to declare the area a disaster area, agriculturally speaking. Most of the crops are no more than a foot tall... Someone was asking about toilet training, Sarah I think. Well, I don't think you want to hear this, but Michael was 7 before I started training him. I was waiting until he started to show some sign of discomfort at being wet (that never did happen). It took about 6 months or so to get him to use the toilet regularly. I remember that initially we were taking him to the washroom every 15 minutes, to make sure we had no accidents. He is finally starting to sleep through the night without accidents too. I found that when I put him in underwear and have him use the washroom before he goes to bed, he wakes up dry...Cool! Hey, a long time ago I was telling how we have this problem with Michael wandering away sometimes. He still wanders, although he's getting better about sticking around. Get this: a community group in Bluffton is donating $2000.00 Canadian toward the purchase of some kind of monitoring system for him! Yeah, pretty soon, he'll be able to go play outside freely. Does anyone have any input on a particular system they have used or know of personally. I've found about three on the Internet, but don't know which would be the best one for us. I'll keep you updated. Oh, I never said..Michael is "officially" in grade 3 this year. They have him with the class as much as possible last year, and I anticipate the same this year. OF COURSE the wonderful special ed. teacher they had last year has transferred to a different town this year - some sorry excuse about wanting to be where her husband is. Sheesh. Where are her loyalties anyhow? LOLOL God has always provided wonderful people to work with Michael, I am sure He will continue to do so. Well, I guess I should go. Nope, my son does not have an extra to blame it on, he was just a wild child, and still is. Lol...of all my children, he has easily been my biggest challenge. Savannah is doing great these days. At her four month appointment she was 12lbs 5oz, and she is still nursing like a champ. Nothing but momma's milk here. I really enjoy reading all of your stories. I suppose they will not seem so funny to me when Savannah is older, so I must enjoy them now. :) | ||

I just saw I spelled LIAM'S name wrong, I am sorry!!!!!! Sara nathaniel's mommy, I am so glad for you that he is starting to potty train!!!! It tool Chase a total of about three or four months once he got serious about it. Chase was potty trained completely right after his fourth birthday, good luck with Nathaniel. Kristy and Ro..... either one of you, he is yours! LOLOL him and water must have a specail bond lately as he got his older brother David ( the 22 year old) and his little brother Zach ( 3) with the hose while the two of them were together on the trampoline!!!! he ran in the house, got under the sink and turned the water back on ( yeah we thought we were smart shutting it off under there, LOL) and tunred it right on them when they were not even paying attention!!!! Now THAT was funny!!!! Grr he has been a super stinker today!!! he did tell me that he was going to marry me when I asked him what pretty girl he thoguht he would like to marry, awwwwww little brat even knows how to brown nose and make me forgive him for everything instantly, LOLOL, and I got a kiss to go with the compliment!! Stella......ROFL, please please dont be issuing this bad child of mine any challenges, LOLOL! Yikes, I can see him taking you up on it, LOLOL!!! WTG Sarah, you do my heart good hearing stories about you!!!! Maybe your mom will bring you to Dayton for Labor day weekend and you and Chase can both terrorize the hotel!!!! And the story about flooding the car...OMG, did the child live??? LOLOL that is the best story I heard yet and not even the extra chromozone to blame it on, LOLOL! Jackie... Chase was in a toddler bed by the time he was two, LOL, as 9even though it is hard to imagine this innocent child doing it) he kept climbing out of his bed and I was worried he was going to get his leg caught or hurt. We did however have to keep his bedroom door closed as he wouldnt stay in and that was the start of haivng to stay with him until he fell asleep, and sighhh, yes we still have to..ugh. Ok need to go finish reading posts. BTW.... Susan and family are on their way home from sunny Florida as we speak. She figures to be home about 3 or 4 in the morning, yikes! Any bets on whether she goes right to bed or gets on the computer? We are seriously considering putting him in a toddler bed he just bangs around that crib and wakes up with little bruises on his poor little head. He just don't have enough room in there anymore,but I know when we make that move he will be in there having a ball instead of sleeping. Has the kitchen dried out yet?? I'm sure it must be sparkling clean!! Reminds me of the time Sarah was in hospital - she was 4, she had had open heart surgery. I stayed at the hospital with her but I had to eat sometimes ok? Well I went for my breakfast - I'd say I was gone 20 mins max and walked back into the ward to a great commotion and heard "There's her mother" - OMG what had she done?!! Well my little angel had gone into the Staff Bathroom, turned on the hot and cold taps full blast and when the Ward Sister noticed the water pouring out under the door and tried to get in - Sarah sat against the door laughing her head off. When Chris (the Sister) eventually got in Sarah was dancing and splashing in the water, soaked to the skin and soaked Chris in the process!!!!! SHE FLOODED THE HOSPITAL WARD and they had to get a suction machine to get the water out - OMG I was sooooooo embarrassed but Sarah still thought it was the best thing ever!!! Well I have started to try and potty train Nathaniel..We put him on the potty every 2 hours, so far it is going good. I showed him the sign for potty and now he does it when I tell him that it is potty time :) We get success about half the time, the other half he wont go...Does anybody know how long it usually takes to potty train ? Jeff and I took Olivia to the beach yesterday. She usta HATE the water cause it's pretty cold here in the Pacific...NOW MAN OH MAN!!! I wish you all coulda been there. NO FEAR. She LOVED LOVED LOVED it..Couldn't get her outta the water.Talk about scary Robin. There were some BIG waves yesterday and she just ADORED getting knocked down and trying to stay up as the waves crashed on her... ALL the kiddos in the water were staring at her cuz she waslaughing soo hard and having the best time.She has one of those laughs that makes you hafta laugh too...We're taking her and kyle later today and making a picnic dinner to eat after our swim...AND its amazing how good sunscreen is cause my little blondie is as fair as ever. Not a burn in sight...;)We were in the water for 3 hours too...Let's see Liv is very into games these days. The other day we had a gang of kids outside and she caught on to duck duck goose right away. Had more fun. OCCASIONALLY she would slam someone a LITTLE too hard on the head but she got it..LOL....ALL day long she wants to play some game.Not sure if she made this up but she says to me..MOM WAANA PLAY A GAME?? I say YEA she says LETS PLAY THE ALLIGATOR GAME then snaps her hands and chases me all over the house. Incessantly I tell ya...Well gotta hit the books but will catch ya all later.. Been so busy with the boys and working that I haven't had a chance to get here to say HI. Hope everyone is enjoying there Summer. Robin, Thank you for remembering my Birthday !! I am so thrilled !! I had a fabulous day. Keith took me away for the weekend to Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland and we stayed on a boat for 2 days ( most of the time, we did sleep at a motel) It was really fun and relaxing. Did you know that they have bars that you can dock at :) ?? !!! Drank some skyy Blues and Rum runners...just relaxing on the boat, listening to music. I didn't want to come home. He says we are going to do it again next year !! I don't want to wait all year WAAAAAAAAAA. Emily attended Eastern New Mexico University/Roswell and lived in the dorms there...she was in their special services program many miles from home. When she comes back from Marnies she will be job hunting and hopefully finding a roommate to move into a nice apartment complex not too far from our home. She was in an inclusive setting throughout school (good and bad) and I would be happy to chat with anyone about that....She has a 6'2" boyfriend (obviously not DS..LOL) named Elvis who drives a classy red truck...is battling a weight problem....and is "addicted" to her soaps....Passions being her favorite. I am really lonesome right now as she is really good company...but her sis is getting to "walk a mile in my shoes" at the moment and see what it is like to deal with independence issues with someone who sometimes lacks the judgement to deal with complex situations...they seem to be doing fine, though. I will keep you all posted as to her adventures in the Big City....they are headed to even a bigger city next week...they want to go to NYC on the train for a couple of days.....Hello to everyone new...this site seems to be growing by leaps and bounds....... | ||

Ok, I have been telling Maria ( Stevens mom) that Chase has been good lately and HA!..... I spoke waaayyyy too soon! I now hav a new Chase story for you all, grrrrrrrr. He went out in the back yard to play ( it is totally fenced in and I can keep a eye on him out the back door. He got the hose without my knowledge and turned it on ( ok fine, guess I wasnt keeping that great an eye on him right?) he came up on the patio and I DO NOT KNOW WHAT POSSESSES HIM..but he sprayed the hose right into the freaking HOUSE!! I heard the noise and came runing and there he is laughing with glee while shooting water all over my kitchen!!!!! I screamed, he droped the hose..said oopps sorry mom, and RAN FOR HIS LIFE!!!! When I finally caught him and dragged him back to the house and into the very wet dripping kitchen, and told him to clean it UP, he had the nerve to say to me " NO! It was an accident, now shoo shoo" and motioned with his hands for me to GO AWAY from him!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, where did this child come from????? He cant possibly be mine, I truely know I could never have such a naughty naughty child!!!! And btw, speaking of refrigerator pictures, do you know the mess that pictures done in marker and paint hanging on the frig make when hit with a water hose??? No, geez I guess MOST people wouldnt!!!!!! Let me tell you, I had paint and marker sliding down the frig and onto the floor, it went well with all the water!!! ( however I now have a very clean frig, stove and floor) Grrrrrrrrrrrr is all I can say as of right now!!! Any one interested in a brat for a month or so???Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!!! Ok I am calm now, sorry but i truely needed to vent there for a second. I have to share with you what he said a little bit ago.... I just love it when he says perfectly nomral 10 year old kid things, which doesnt happen often here ... he was sitting in his room and I waled in and said what you doing and he looked at me and said..." me bored, what there to do?" I would of never dreamed he would ever say that to me, LOLOL!!! This too from the kid who owns every toy made. WELL ROBIN DEAREST!!!! We are baking here.. I can't believe how HOT it is.. Especially at my house. It is near the beach and is generally about 10 degrees less than the downtown l.a. forecast BUT it was 85 at 6 pm last night. And you KNOW how much I LOVE this DANG HEAT!!!!LOL.. So WALLOW girl WALLOW. I am WAYYYY too too jealous...You deserve it though...ENJOY!!!! The shoot went well yesterday. Took Liv a while to warm up though. The people from Disney were great...In the beginning Olivia LOUD girl Lipton whispered EVERYTHING..LOLOL.. Figures eh?? BUT she had a tea party with her cuz(who I brought along to help and maybe get on which she did LOL) and her bears,sang her abc's etc... She was WAY more quiet than usual..STINKER!!! BUT they said they had enough to use for the short spot and they thought they could get it together and most likely will air her, Ya never know if your gonna be put on the cutting room floor. They said they would send me a tape and it will air in 3-4 weeks... COOL. I hope she makes it cuz I am DYING for you all to meet her. Well gotta get to escuela.. Take care.. I have a question! When is a good time to take Bella to an ENT? She is not having any problems that I am aware of. I was thinking it might be wise to take her to get checked out, just in case. Am I being too protective? Well, her daycare has given me her first piece of art! It is her hand and foot prints in bright pink paint! I couldn't wait to put it on the fridge! I couldn't figure out how they got her to open her hands. She only opens them up when she wants to. She is starting to "talk" to us. We talk to her alot, and she seems to dig on it. She also is starting to recognize us when we are in a room together. She follows us with her eyes and will look around for us! She is just the cutest thing. Michele~I do feel a very different bond with Savannah than I do with my other two children. I suppose I am much much more protective of her. Of course right now she is still a baby, and mommies are most protective of their babies. It is another beautiful day here Mary, so hoping it floats your way. Tonihgt is a big picnic at the zoo for us suckers who have planted and cared for a garden there. ROLL CALL.......... I am Tammy, West Aussie Mum to Emily(10), Kate(8), and Lewis(21mos.DS). Trying to clean up was impossible cause he kept getting into the middle and swishing hiis hands around and spreading it all over !! Endedup shutting him in his bedroom for nearly 15 mins so I could clean it up without his help !! He screamed the whole time. Made me feel bad but..... Has anyone had a sleep study done before. Justin goes August 10th. His ENT ordered it to further evaluate whether the tonsils stay or go. He also has to redo his hearing test because he failed the last one due to a double ear infection we didn't know about until the test. Becky glad to hear Justin is on his way. Hope all is well,we are hanging in there with the heat.It was 97 yeasterday and today it was 93 and stromed all day,so its real humid right now,ugg Justin is doing good he is now snail crawling all over the place,sorta like combat crawling but he looks like a snail or a inch wrom when he does it.Justin got hit in the nose real hard yesterday it bleed real bad and now is swollen,big bubba got him with a real hard ball. I was in the video place getting a movie tonight and there was a lady with her daughter that had ds, the daughter is 23 and she works at a day care as a teacher aid,it is the day care I have thanking about looking into for two days a week for Justin,she would be the aid in his class,I thank that would be so neat she is a real pretty lady and her mother was very nice. My book is full with all the new people that have done roll call.I meet a family with a daughter around Justin's age and told them about this site,so if you are out there reading post up and let every one met you and your cute little girl. I was so interested in your question about sensing something abt your child before they were born. Your story is really awesome! I knew Gabe would be a boy from the moment I knew I was pregnant. Everyone said, did you have tests done? How can you be sure? What if it turns out to be a girl? I KNEW he would be a boy!!(Must have been the testorone leaking even then, LOL!) And I was so worried thro the pregnancy--had not one single bad thought when prenant w/ Ariel but altho in perfect health, and VERY active little boy in utero just could not stop worrying while carrying Gabe. One day I just heard the voice of my Mom (who is deceased) telling me everything will be all right about this baby. And of course, my Mom on the most important things, was always right! I know she knew. Ro: on the question of adoption: in half a heartbeat, in a New York minute! And please, a child with special needs Gabe has been the most wonderful teacher any Mom could have. Why wouldn't I want to share that and hope to make both another child and me happy? | ||

I don't get to post on this board like I used to. I don't even get to read that much, but I'm here tonight! Yeah! I do get to chat most weeks and I try to keep an eye on the BB. I'm mom to Matthew 8 and Maggie 17 months who has DS. I'm married to Tim who is a great guy. He's quiet, but a wonderful father. Tim has three older kids; Crystal 23, Todd 22 and Justin 21. We also have 1 grandchild, Laura and another one on the way! We live in Virginia at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains. It's beautiful! Maggie is doing well. Has two holes in her heart, profound and moderate hearing losses detected at birth which she wears hearing aides for, tubes put in her ears last month, and now we discover hyperthyroidism. Yes you read that right! She nevers likes to do what everyone else is doing, she has to be different! LOL! We're on our way to UVA to see a pediatric endocrinologist ourselves! Always something exciting going on at our house it seems. Heidi - We've had a rough time with Maggie's thyroid and just getting doctors to recognise that it is something that needs to be checked. Here goes........deep breath in.......I'm Carolyn from New Zealand. Tony my DH and I have 4 super duper kids. Harrison is 10, Claudia is now 9, Emma (ds) is 6 and Nicki (ds) is 5. Emma and Nicki are our biological kids and we are just lucky to have 2 gorgeous girls with Trisomy 21. Emma attends a Special School because her behaviour is....how would you say.....unique. I think she'd easily run rings around Robyn's Chaseman. I always smile when I read Robs stories about Chase. You could just insert the name "Emma"! Emma LOVES her special school and the teachers love her. SHe gets so many fantastic services there that regular school couldn't eg. speech therapy, PT, Horse riding lessons, swimming lessons, cooking, music and the list just goes on and on! She made herself a ham sandwich yesterday. Apparently she got the bread and put ham and lettuce on it then put the other slice of bread on top. SHe put it on a plate and took it to the table then took the lettuce and ham out, ate that then ate the bread! Teachers just thought it was hilarious! Nicki is 5 and attends a regular Montessori preschool and is just one clever cookie. She knows the routine there and tells the other kids off if the don't follow the rules! She has a teacher aide only part time and seems to cope really well with being on her own. She is one of the most popular kids there and is always getting invites to birthday parties.....cool eh?I took her to the zoo yesterday as she has the morning off and I videoed the whole visit. Her language is fantastic and she could name all the animals - animals are her passion...she may be a vet yet. When we got home we had to watch the video with Emma over and over and over.....and over. What a great day :-) Anyway that's enough about us. Not to raise a stink because I know there maybe a few things said BUT........ Why adopt:)LOL Lets leave the field open and say with or without a disability. Robin with 4 kids and all of them adorable;)Would you adopt a child???? Do you have love to share and blonde hair( I mean truely blonde not dyed;) left to turn gray? LOL oppps maybe I should have left the hair part out;)LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Me....... First I would say YES!!!!!!! Wouldn't think about whether I should, but if the opportunity should arrise and my house big enough, money enough to stretch til squeaking and no questions asked( hate to do all the blasted paperwork;). IN A DAMN HEARTBEAT. Some of the reasons I would. 1.) everyone needs someone. -a child more so needs to know love and compassion from someone just for them. ya know like a family that they can actually say THESE ARE MY PARENTS and be proud that they have someone. -A parent(in this case me) I would be receiving love from a child (possible the only way I would get a girl;) that can bring joy to a parent that you can't buy or steal. Has to be given to you wholeheartly. I have noticed that everytime a new addition to a family comes along there is a kind of peaceful loving GROWTH that can't happen without it. Did that make sense? This new addition can bring out the innermost feelings in people that are locked away and drawn out only by SPECIAL things. Would you adopt? Ro P.s. I know at least one that has adopted a child here. Maybe they can enlighten us on the life of a family with an adopted member. Any others with adopted members I don't know about out there? | ||

Michelle....hmmmm, I hate to admit it but yes, I feel different towards Chase then the other three boys. I love them all the same but with Chase, I feel wayyy more protective, kinda like a mama bear with pms I guess, LOL!!!If someone were to look weird at one of my other boys, I would think nothng of it, just think maybe they had a problem or thought they knew him. BUT..if they look weird at Chase, the mama bear takes over and goes on the defense, does that make any sense??? Well I am Sara, Mom to 3 ( almost 3.5 ) year old Nathaniel. My hubby is Mike and we live in Calgary, Canada. Nathaniel is not walking independantly yet, but he is trying real hard!! He butt scoots very FAST tho :p He is STILL fighting oral feeds BUT is drinking small amounts of water :) ( he is gtube fed ) as for his trach, well the bronc we just had still shows his trachea collapsing, so now we see the Dr in Sept to talk about the next step ( maybe reconstructive surgery ) We had Nathaniel's speech assessment today and they are amazed at the words he can say with this trach :) Still wont say mama yet tho ;p Nathaniel will start going to PREP 3 half morning a week in the fall. ( PREP is a program for kids with DS, to get them ready for typical school ) He is growing tall and is now 3feet :) His weight is slow to go up tho and is still 25lbs :p As for us, well Mike started up his painting business again and has been working steady for now ( KNOCKING ON WOOD ) and I am just spending my days with Nathaniel. I just went to the NDSS conf in Nashville and had a great time !! Sooooooooooo that is it for us :) Sara | ||

Steff, Nic is fine....the tests came back good...No cancer.....just a HUGE but NORMAL mole! Atleast it is gone now! Thanks for thinking about him and asking! How is Liv? Courtney has told me the last few days that she wants to go to school!! Believe me, I want her to go too!!!!! LOL I guess we are going to Florida Saturday for a week....Pensacola here we come!! Anybody on the way want to meet up? We go down I49 to Baton Rouge then hang a left and take 10 into Pensacola. My name again is Michele and I live in sunny old St. Petersburg Florida. I have 2 girls Kaylyn (10) and Kourtney (3DS). I want to thank Robin for the pick me up just feels good to know that I am not the only one questioning myself. My daughter Kourtney is starting to potty train and her favorite new word is pee pee. lol. Kourtney had open heart surgery at 3& 1/2 months to correct the a/v canal defects. And might i say that we have been very fortunate that is the only hospital stay we have had (knock on wood). She get PT, ST, and OT. And actually has a vocab. of around 50 to 60 words not all clearly spoken but she says them. She is now starting to put small sentences together and we are excited about that. My older daughter just adores her little sister and I think why I have not attended any support groups is because my family is large and they all are very supportive, but not in the way that i her mom needs. Her dad who is a gift from above himself doesn't even understand sometimes how I feel. He just says that is my daughter and I will love her no matter what. It is not a question of whether or not I love my child. I love her more than life. I do have another question for anyone to answer. Do you feel a closer bond with your DS child than your other children. Not a closer bond but different? And did anyone know or have dreams before thier child was born? Because I had dreams that she was talking to me and telling me that she was different than other kids. Just a question please no one take offense. | ||

This weekend was real hard for us when we went to church and a woman congratulated us on the baby. After explaining the situation, the minister asked for announcements and two couples shared the news of their new born babies in the family. I knew the minister was waiting for us to stand up and say something since the last time we went to church we asked for prayers for this baby since we were told we were one of two couples being considered to adopt. Anyway we were chosen in the end, but the bparents kept their child. WE are happy for the baby but do feel a sadness here.TO make matters worst a woman who had no idea of our plan to adopt told me she might be pregnant and wanted to take a pill to abort her baby. I did ask her to consider adoption, but felt horrible after getting off the phone. THE GOOD NEWS is that we have sent our birth letter to Robin at the Down Syndrome Association and we still have high hopes of adopting one day. This group has been a great inspiration to us and we are so thankful to have found this site as well! | ||

OK, now I am exhausted...... I go away for a week and now Im lost. I have just spent the last nearly 2 hours trying to read all the posts, and I have NO IDEA of what I have just read !!! In one braincell and out another !! We have been away camping for the last few days. Lewis just LOVED every minute of it. We went quite primitive... now showering facilities and a shovel and paper for... you know what. By the time we came home we were FILTHY!! and lovin it !! Lewis spent the whole 3 days crawling in the dirt as much as possible. Not just that but he was getting whole fistfulls of dirt and RUBBING it all over himself and making sandcastles in his hair!!! When I tried to clean him as best I could... he screamed and tipped over the bucket of water!! then squirmed until he got into the mud he had just created!!! I gave in then and took him for a swim (we were only metres from the beach) so I tricked him into getting clean !! I really love the NorthWest here !! It is mid winter and we can still go camping and swimming at the beach!! My family in the south of the state are freezing!! We met another family in town the other day with a little girl with DS who is only a few months older than Lewis. We have the same ST, OT, and PT, so have spoken to them and arranged some of our sessions together. Should be fun!! She was the cutest kid!! and Lewis just went all shy!! He is such a Dork sometimes. At home he is so boisterous and loud, yet when we go to any of his therapies, or out anywhere, he puts on this shy act. He gives little coy looks, and smiles sweetly, and doesnt make a sound. People think he looks sooooo cute and they all want to pick him up cause he is like a little doll...... Rat Bag.. if they only knew!! He has perfected the art of being cute!! I went into histerics I was so scared!Oh my God my heart is still racing! I too feel like I'm failing her at times, but I know that I'm doing the best that I can so I try not to dwell on it to much, since I work evenings and orlany is in school all day I really don't get to spend to much time with her so what little time I have I try to make the best of it especially on the weekends. Had a moment & thought I'd add my name to the roll call. My name is Sherri & I'm the very proud mom to Jared (4.5yrs) & Jacob (1yr). We live in Northwest Oklahoma about 2 1/2hrs from Becky (Mr. Justin's mom). Jared has had open heart surgery, 2 sets of tubes in his ears, adenoids removed & 2 eye muscle surgeries. Overall he's doing really well.....amazing me with something new every day :) I'm so proud to say that I think potty training is finally starting to kick in. He'll actually go a couple of times a day without me having to remind him :) As he says "I can do it all by myself" :) I can't believe it's almost been 5yrs on this grand adventure that we're on. I sure wish that I had been online from day one.....those first couple of years sure would have been easier to deal with, especially since I don't have access to a local support group. I started posting here at Uno Mas in Dec. 1999 & I used to be a regular, but as life has gotten more heptic...I'm more of a lurker. Well I guess that about covers it for us......oh yea, forgot to mention that Jared will be going back into a typical pre-k when school starts again in August. The program he was in last year was 3hrs a day 5x week. He was in a class with 11 kiddos, teacher & teachers aide. I know that inclusion is a really hot topic to discuss, but I have to tell you that I can't believe how much I've seen my child "blossom" by being around typical peers his own age. BTW, it was easy to teach Chase to read, I started with sight words on recipe cards, only three letter words first with a picture and then I went to the words with no picture and then we moved to four letter words and now we do anyword we think of. Nev er let any one tell you that kids cant learn to read orr comprehend just by teaching them words at sight. As Chase's mom, I know it is true.I followed exactly what the book said for "teaching reading to your child with DS" said to do. It works great!!! Roooo, hmmmm, I am sure you came up with Shavid david but in case I am not right.... ( age is affecting thy memory :-) we can then blame it on Adrienne aka pm jr or perhaps Bad Becky but i dont think it was her :-) either way, it is something you would of said..LOLOLOL and it has stuck!!!! Daniel and Delano were all the way at the other end of the pool(9') and were being taught new strokes:) They are really comfortable in the deep end since we end up over there all the time anyway:) They really have the basics down they just need perfecting skills:) If you have never put your kids in a classs like this I would suggest it to all:) The kids really have a blast. As soon as I get this film developed I will post the photos:) I will drop off the film in one hour develop booth and will pick it up tomorrow. Michelle, I feel like I'm failing Cody all the time. I have 3 other children and I feel like I should be working with him more but just don't have the time. Wow Robin! Thats great that Chase is reading at second grade level. I like to blame the school system but know that I am mostly to blame for not working more with him. Ok, Roll Call: I am Kristi married to Ron for 5 years.(Would have been 13) Like Robin, I married a jerk the first time,got divorced after 2 years, and then remarried 6 years later. Thank God he finally grew up...LOL. I have 3 daughters: Hayli 10, Bobbie Jo 4, Kylie 3, and then I have my lil stinker Cody 8 (DS). We live in Benton, Illinois. We also have a giant Alaskan Malamute named Skylar. I am a SAHM. I had Cody 3 days before my 23rd birthday. His father, another jerk, didn't stick around after the diagnosis. Thats ok because dh loves him like he was his own and wants to adopt him. I did not take the diagnosis DS bad, all I knew was that he was a beautiful baby boy, and I was going to do everything I could to make sure he thrived. Boy, I just didn't know just how hard that was going to be, especially with the school system. Right now he is in a self-contained classroom but I am hoping to change that this year. First...Susan.... I missed you in chat when you imed me and then I missed your phone call buddy ..wahhhh! And LOL to your message, we all miss you bunches! The other Jackie I think is Justins mom and I also heard she lives in Michigan so I would really love to hear from her again. She mentioned on the BB that she was thinking of coming to the Dayton Ohio get together for Labor day weekend. Allisa.... I thought about what you said about how to approach young adults with Ds and I am going by my students but...they would say no to you if you asked them if they have DS. They hate to be singled out like that and most of them deny having any disability that makes them different. But maybe saying hi there and then saying somethng like "wow my daughter looks like you donest she" would be ok and probably get them to talk. Hugs to you kid! Ok Ro.... so you are here but not in chat ,w aht is with that little texas lady???? Ok my roll call info .... Robin, married to SD or Dave which ever you perfer ( (Ro gave him the name SD) married 11 years. Mom to four sons ..Mike 25, David 22, Chase (with DS) just turned 10 and Zachary is 3 yikes, yes they are all mine..I did the twice is nice kinda family thing. Married a jerk, got divorced and met the man of my dreams (ok well most of the time :-) We live in Mid Michigan, have a giant yellow lab named Bailey, had tons of tropical fish which Chase just killed off, (almost got him and me killed by DH :-) I work at a school for disabled young adults ages 18 to 26 as here in Michigan our kids can go to school til they are 26, only state in the USA which does that. Chase also has ADHD and TONS of sensory issues to go with the DS so most days I think the DS is a breeze compared to the ADHD and sensory stuff. He is the light of my life, makes me smile and LOL all the time, he is smart as can be, most times I think he is too smart at some things, like escaping from us or climbing on the ladder or catching fish and putting them in the swimming pool or locking me outside in my nightie :-) He can read at a second grade level, it is his favorite thing in the world to do, next to fighting with his little brother or making messes!!! However I can forgive him anything when he puts his skinny little arms around my neck and tells me I am his best friend.....ahhhhh how sweet, even if I do know he said it cause he wants to go for a ice cream:-) OK see, I forgot all the other posts, darn it!!! I also need to go clean the house while the rug rats are gone at day care and camp. Hugs to you all, Robin | ||

Sorry I missed chat last nite -- but by the time our friends left & we got the kiddos down for the nite it was pretty late! I did some lurking & saw that even if I would've had time I might not have gotten in! Looks like it was a Full House in chat last nite, huh?! Too bad I missed it! :( OK -- someone suggested it & I "second" the motion to do a "Roll Call" - so here's mine! :) I am Linda, Mom to 3 great kids - Adam 7 (and the wonderful reason I visit here :) ) - Kate (9 will be 10 in August) - and Aimee (our oldest - just turned 13 in June - ! YIKES !) Married to DH - Ralph - -- we'll be celebrating # 23 in October! We live in Western NY. Currently I am a SAHM but will probably need to be getting a job soon as the cash flow is getting low! -- Previously had worked in a Mircobiology in a Research & Development Lab, but don't know if I can take all the repetitive motion of that sort anymore -- so may look for other kinds of employment.......Adam will be entering 2nd grade in September -- he has been in an "included" classroom setting (or some I guess call it "Mainstreamed") ever since he started pre-school - which for us was at age 2 & 3/4 due to his birthday in the middle of November... Started riding a school bus to pre-K (scary! - for me - not for him! LOL!) and he STILL is loving it & loving school! There is a local support group here, for families that have kids w/ DS -- it's been a great group, but I found I needed & wanted more info & other parent's ideas & just someone else who may have been where I am at etc. Often I think of something during the day or read an article & the group meetings are nice but often have a speaker for parents w/ a bit older children like us - so there isn't alot of time to just share stories-- so that is why I visit here! :) Carmen -- I came to Uno I think it was like 2 years ago this past June & I don't think I remember your posts -- and believe me, back then I read them EVERY day!! I'm sorry --- well, to "cover up" my loss of memory -- I guess I should say "Welcome BACK & glad to see you posting again"!! LOL! Oh Yeah - somebody else mentioned our VERRRY MUCH MISSED M-I-A UNO Friends -- Friends like PATTY & SHAWNA & DEBBIE (self advocate!) & I think there was a TINA -- and also I am sorry but I forget the Mom's name - but it was Alex's Mom & how about MARY & BILL from the UK - And MARIE - Jared's Mom I have seen once in awhile here -- but not of late, And I think there was another Linda -- Linda K I think and another Jackie (besides Emily's Mom!) oh yeah and how about the "other Becky" (Ummm I think she was the "good" Becky! I tried and tried to get on chat but it says the user limit has been reached so fraid to say I am now SOL..LOL!!!Oh well... I am Steff married to Jeff we have 2 kids Kyle(5) and olivia(4)..Olivia is my child born with ds. We reign from Los Angeles California... Finally got our satellite fixed. My kids had NO TV since wednesday. The termite tent messed it up. It was nice not having the tube BUT I will be glad to have a diversion while trying to cook dinner(that is spongebob time LOL) Well I talkesd to the lady from Disney.She wants Olivia to do some things that I believe will be kinda tough for her.BUT hey she surprises me all the time.She wants Olivia to say.HI MY NAME IS OLIVIA I AM $ years old. I like to read or whatever it is she likes to do. She wants her to do this without prompting. HMMMM...We'll see. CONNIE CONNIE CONNIE...OH MAN..Liv does that too. Please keep turning AROUND TO LAUGH CUZ LEMME TELL YA ITS NOT AS FUNNY WHEN THEY GET OLDER. bUT lIV DOES THE SAME EXACT THING TO THIS DAY.It's not so FUNNY anymore. The kids played all weekend and swam and swam and swam.I can't get em out of the water..LOL.. BUT they sleep SOOO good when they swim so hey I say we swim EVERYDAY!!!We have a neighborhood pool at the park and YES Suzi they will NOT let any floating devices in NO MATTER WHAT..I just don't wanna go cuz I am NOT NOT NOT getting in that public pool full of kids ewwwww....think of all the pee in there...LOL... My moms big jacuzzi is fixed so they can hit it up a few times a week.Livs head is above water in there and there is enough room for the kids to swim cuz my dad is like Tim Allen the bigger the better and made a beautiful 14X8 foot jacuzzi.I can heat it enough to take the chill out and all are VERY HAPPY. Although I wouldn't need to Liv will get in any water even freezing cold hose water so hey we may hit the beach again soon cuz she usta HATE the cold pacific but now I think she will be A-OK... I'm Connie from Indiana. Sherri thanks for the info on hippotherapy. I pictured petite little Erin riding this huge hippo...quite a cute picture!!! Around here we do not have hippotherapy (certified like on the site) but, we do have horsetherapy and they kids have to be 3 to get started so, we are waiting for Collin to turn 3 now. Can someone explain to me how we can spend day after day, hour after hour, hand over hand showing our little ones how to do something and jumping for joy when they accomplish it but things we don't want them to learn...they watch ONCE and accomplish it on the first try? Collin, now when he is not happy or does not want to do something, puts his hands on his hips and stomps his foot and yells at me!! While cute now at 2 this will not be so cute when he turns 3 or 4 but, you know how hard it is to keep from laughing and smiling? Susan - I hope your having fun!!! WTG Erin!!!! ~Wow, 2 proud Mamas this morning! And Susan! Quit teasing us! I told Matt that Em & the boys get to swim with the dolphins today & he goes "Aw Man! When can we go do that????"We did go to the waterpark Wed & the local park & pool yesterday. Matt & Nick are going to the Pirates game with my parents today & possibly Mike will take Sam, Meri & I to the car show at the park today...I havn't been in the Chevelle all year.He took Sam to a large car show yesterday while I took the other 3 to the pool...and they didn't crawl home till after 10pm!Then Sam was jazzed telling me all about the cars & what he ate. Then we had to stand out in the yard & watch the fireworks from the show's finale. ~Oh, but here's my bummer from yesterday....I hafta figure out who to contact about it tomorrow.Our school district has 2 community pools.We usually go to the one in the borough as it's next door to Mike's mom's house.The other is in a nice park in the twp.Well, we went there yesterday because one of Matt's classmates was having a birthday party there.So we go to the gate & I pay for myself & Nick, I'm carrying Meri & her baby float, Matt has the beach bag.....The girl at the window stops us & says they don't allow flotation devices...(WHAT?)"You'll have to leave it here."Huh?, My daughter has DS & doesn't walk yet....."Doesn't matter, you can't use it here" (Meri has one of those floaty boats.....TG I'd left Sam go to the car show with Mike cuase then what would I have done? He wouldn't have even been allowed the little swimsuit with the float pads)I asked for the mgr & got the same story. So we stayd but only because of the party or I woulda hightailed it to the other pool.... Merideth was scared to death & clung to me all afternoon, barely getting into the water...and let me tell you it gets awfully tiring hauling a 20+ lb kiddo around the pool all afternoon! Also, the pool had no ramped or sloped entry...just 4 metal ladders...not fun to navigate while holding her! Do I call ARC or UCP tomorrow & put them onto it...or do I try to find the parks board of directors on my own???? I think they need fined for non-compliance.This park is directly across the street from the one elementary school & the Elem. supervisor's office in our school district...I just kept thinking of how many kids that are differently abled there are in the community & they can't get into this pool??? !!!I'm fuming thinking of it! | ||

Hey all,,,, Susan... great to hear from you & glad you are all having such a good time !! Sherri.... awesome link ! Thanks ! I sent it out to a few of my friends as well..... so Connie.... Sherri answered it for you.... yes hippotherapy is horse therapy ! LOL Did I tell you all we met an amazing young man with DS while we were in Maine ? We were having breakfast in a small restaraunt one morning & of course I noticed him right off. We were sitting behind him in a booth and he was alone drinking his coffe & reading the morning paper. He introduced himself & told me how much he loved kids.... he works at a camp !! Was on his way to work as a matter of fact, just getting his caffeine fix & morning news update... wow... really cool ! I hate to say it... but so much more normal than I expected.... reading the paper & drinking coffee !! LOL Sorry, I know that is politically incorrect to say ? I loved meeting him. But again.... I need help on how to initiate a conversation with a young adult with DS and let them know that Erin also has Ds.... he never really got a good look at her, 'cause her back was to him the whole time. Usually if I am in that sitution, they have brought attention to the fact that Erin looks like them, and then I can say, "Yes she does, she has DS, too"... but I am unsure if I can ask someone outright..."do you have Ds ? I was just wondering becasue my daughter does, too" Is that very offensive ? Would they prefer to just converse & not be dwelling on DS ? Any moms of older children have advice ? Jackie, where are you ? And where is Jackie's wonderful friend & poet Debbie ?... I could use your help answering this !! Erin was in school Friday morning & I was peeking in the window of the classroom watching her & it is amazing how far she has come in school... and amazing how little things mean sooooo much. The kids had just been read a story & sang their goodbye song ( and erin was NOT sitting on a teachers lap like she usually does to keep her paying attention... she was all involved) and when the song was done, she stood up with the rest of the kids, walked over to her cubby for her backpack.... that was HUGE.... usually she is kind of in her own little world, and not as involved as the other kids, but she got right up & got her backpack.... I imagine that we all were,. I knew that my baby had ds befor she was born so it was very stressful for me during my last 3 months, I barely slept and was a nervous wreck worrying that something would go wrong and how would I handle it, I wished I hadn't known it would of made my life easier for weeks after she was born I just cried and cried I was so scared everyone kept giving me opinions that I really didn't need to hear. its so good that you found this site you came to the right place, so keep your chin up girl things will get better.. Linda hello to you too, I'm not so new here just been M.I.A. for a while I barely post since I have a hectic schedule,I work late and I get home tired, I could only get on the pc when I come home at nite after the lil grimlin goes to sleep..or in the morn if I don't have too much to do she doesn't let me type in peace if shes up. Orlany will be 4 yrs old on aug 2nd I plan on having a picnic party for her. the lil girl with the big attitude was a busy beaver today making messes she got a hold of a marker I use for her clothing and scribbled on my furnisher, then I put her in the tub and she took her bucket and poured water all over the floor while I was cleaning the ink off the couch what a mess I had! I live in N.Y. there are no support groups here in my area so I was lucky to find this site last year at first I would just read till I got enough courage to post, I don't get to join the chat I'm working while you guys are having fun..bummer! well I really must go I have soo.. much to do, my lil sister is moving to california in a few days her hubby is in the marines and he got new orders so we're having a family B.B.Q it'll be the last time we see her for a while. Hi all, Steff... I know just what you mean about food being so much better when someone else prepares it.... that is me with salads.... I love eating salads out, but it is such a nuisance to make them myself I rarely do ! Maria.... welcome to Uno... it is a great place to be :) My daughter had heart sugery 2 years ago... it feels like it was yesterday...where did the time go ? Anyways... she was 4 months at the time & feel free to e-mail me with any questions, worries, etc... or post up here :) Hey Cindy... long time no see. I do know what you mean about immersing yourself in all things Ds !! LOL Latley I have been "out" of it.... but starting to become immersed again. Sometimes I need to just chill out & step back. AAA!!! HI!!!!! Well gotta share something....Yesterday i was teaching Olivia how to dribble the basketball...She tried REAL hard but just couldn't get it....WELL then I start tossing the basketball to her gently... hafta tell her to put her arms out before I throw it so she'll catch it otherwise it'll smash her in the bod or face. So she is catching BUT everytime she catches she turns her head to the side not looking at the ball. I throw it just right so it practically lands in her outstretched arms... SO I am telling her to keep her eye on the ball and hold her arms out. So I say..LIV arms out...she does then I say KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL.. So she drops her arms bends over and makes BIG EYES and stares at the ball. We tried again and again with her consistently putting her arms down and making big eyes at the ball when I tell her to keep her eyes on the ball. It was SOOO FUNNY!!! Those 2 instructions confused the heck out of her..LOL... But really what I was gonna tell you all is that Olivia did something soo cool.Now she can jump really well now. BUT today she jumped off the high step and landed perfectly!!! again and again and again. After all the applause and stuff from Jeff and I she couldn't stop. Normally when jumping off something she would hesitate and kinda do a weenie step off rather than jump but now she can do it.. SO PROUD of herself and me too... The disney people are coming next wed at 1 to film so I won't know when it will air till they let me know but I will... Gotta take my boy to the docs he's had this eye problem for a few weeks the doc gave him some medicine for it and its actually worse so back we go. BYE | ||

Is anyone else like me? Trying to keep it balanced in my mind so I don't stress or get discouraged. I feel kind of silly even SAYING that, since Kaylee has no major health issues and she is learning well and has a ton of good friends. Why would I be discouraged? Because I can think about her hearing loss, her communication difficulties, my fears of our changing schools this fall, what will happen when she's a grown up..will she ever completely figure out phonics, will they really help her fit in at church-going without an aide to 3rd grade sunday school in a big church like ours-where there's like 200 kids in her age group. Etc. etc. My mind can worry about these things, so I'm trying to visit uno just a few times a week and not be obsessive about it like I used to be. I'm happy for all of you that can hang out here daily and still take care of your family well! You guys all offer so much support and encouragment to people you don't even know are reading..those lurkers out there! So, keep it gals---and nice to see all the dads posting too on the Bulletin Board! ANd Steff- I saw that spongebob episode you were telling us about..where he rips his pants! I just died laughing 'cuz I could REALLy picture liv doing that!!!!! Glad you got a couple days in a hotel with yummy food! A gym and a pool! Great! LINDA, Chris does the mimick stuff too sometimes. There was a young boy in his class that did this whole little thing with his hands, slapping his sides then up to his head, etc. Well, one day I caught Chris doing that and being he has enough stuff I want to break habit of, I have to admit I FREAKED on Chris. Very Very loudly screaming STOP THAT. Not the correct way to handle it but was the last thing I needed Chris doing and thankfully it worked. Chris did it one more time in school and got told very sternly STOP it. Never happened again. I like how you handled with no Nintendo better then the way I freaked on Chris. StefF - Welcome back girl! We missed ya! Sounds like the whole fmily had a fab time -- great!! You guys deserve it!! What's this? Another one going on Vacation? Well, A - all I can say is -- Have a blast!! Summer is toooo short!! We'll be here when you get back!!! Robin --- My shy friend!!LOL! How's the weather there? Any rain yet? I don't remember seeing you post before! In answer to your question -- HOW to get Robbie to behave --- I remember that stage for my on Adam -- I can only recommend "Patience"!! LOL! I think part of it is their "developmental" age..... and also the fact that they can't communicate as much as they would like --- so they don't listen, run around, etc. things to release their stress! Hae you tried teaching him any sign language? We found that with Adam if he could sign back some of his needs & desires felt like more of a part of the family. For eatting -- hmmm - I think he was in a high chair up until about age three. How is his appetite diet?? Maybe he wants to make his own choices about food etc.... They want to be independent like everyone else & if he isn't given choices maybe that's why he won't sit for a meal... Also - how about his hearing?? I know Adam had fluid behind his ear drums & in part I think that was why he didn't listen -- I know what you mean tho -- it is frustrating -- seems like they are just into everything & run from 1 toy to another --- Actually in thinking about it -- When Adam got glasses (~age 3) & finally learned to keep them on (~ age 4) & he had his T&A done at abot age 4 too - seems like he did improve as far as re-direction etc... So part of it I thnk was develomenal as well as a few medical issues...Have you had Robbie's hearing checked? How about Tonsils & Adenoids? I dunno - just my opinion - but usually most kids want to please --- so just give him a hug & take a deep breath on those days when it seems it will never end -- Like a lot of things in life "it's just a stage"! (So many new people posting lately -- it is great! -- Maybe some newbies could post who they are & age of their kiddos - I don't always have time to check the BB to read the who's who!) I know what you mean about finding a good ped dentist -- we finally found one -- not too far from us -- Adam still has some reservations but he is soooooo much better now that he is growing up!! :) The first one we went to -- Ohhhh the horror stories! -- Well, le's just say he was the type to control & restrain -- needless to say we got rid of him in a BIG hurry! (And he was recommended to us by our ped Doc -- love our ped Dr BUT --- not his recomendations!! LOL! Good luck to you -- if there are families in your area who have DS child I would ask them to give you anidea of who might be good - then maybe go & checkout the office a few times first before you go -- you know, just to say hi & maybe sit in the waiting room a bit & play w/ toys or read books...think it makes the child feel more at ease if they have been there before & it is not strange to them.... Just a thought.... Annie - Mikey's Mom - You had me ROFL picturing Mikey & the baseball scenario!!! You may be right -- you know everyone has their gifts & it sounds like "track" would be Mikey's!!! I can't rememeber -- so fogive me for asking (haven't had enpugh coffee yet this AM to jog the memory cells) - but doesn't he wear glasses? Is he farsighted or nearsighted? Adam wears his glasses to play -- I think he is nearsighted so he needs them to see... Adam really loves Baseball-- he's been playing it at his summer camp nearly everyday & having a blast! Well if nothing else - Mikey will keep you in shape w/ all tht running! Here's a quick Adam tory & shows how our kiddos pick up everything!! -- The other day I was haigAdam sit on te toilet (as some of you know we've been dealing w/ a constipation issue...) Well he ddn't want me to read him a book --- he didn't want to pick out a book -- he didn't want talk to me - he didn't want me to leave the bathroom -- and he kept sort of whining & making wierd noises & pushing me & pointing -- something he never does - I said "Adam - what's wrong use your words"! Finally after askng him that he says to me "Like Ty". Now there is a boy at Adam's summer camp that I believe has DS -- I think a little younger than Adam but not sure -- well he is not very verbal -- so he was mimicking Ty!! I told him Ty was younger & if Adam was going to act younger then he wouldn't be allowed to play Ninteno! -- He straightened aroundpretty fast! When I told his Councilor that - she said he wasn't around Ty that much this week - but was around him a fair amt LAST week -- so I told her "It must be a "delayed" response - just like everything else"!! LOL! DH is home & so gotta do some chores *sigh*- sorry to have mised chat last nite - had a lot of fun with some very good friends! :) And NO KIDS! :) :) We could actually carry on more than a 1 sentence coversation!! WE'RE BACK.....:) CC...I am SOOO glad Christopher got his FM!!!WTG!!!I know its a PITA BUT I guess since he got it you won't have problems getting other things he may need. I mean since they know you are not meesing around. Now some things like extras I can totally understand why the school district would not pay for some BUT something for his hearing and school????Ridiculous. I can't beleiev they gave you sooo many headaches.... Tammy I e-mailed you I hope you got it!!! RO!!! Hows the summer going???SWIMMING???I did a LOT of that the last couple of days...I love to swim but the greenish tinge to my hair well....guess I could join a band..LOL!!! RADONNA!!!!WAAAAAAAA... LINDA I am sooo glad Adam is enjoying camp. Next year me thinks I can get Liv in summer camp.I'm thinking that the route to go... WELL our 2 day jaunt was FABULOUS!!!!My kids still went to school cuz we stayed close to our neighborhood...SO YES I got to workout in the morning...AFTER LOL..I ate HUMONGOUS breakfasts at the hotel. The breakfast buffet at the hotel came with our room cause Jeff has some kind of priority card for all kinds of hotels and travels so much. Jeff was cracking up cuz I musta ate for 12 every morning.Musta eaten bout 6 eggs half a watermelon and 10 pieces of bacon EVERY morn for the last 3 day!!!Funny thing he was mad cuz I lost 4 pounds cuz I worked out and swam all the time..LOL!!!I LOVE MY BREAKFAST and NEVER have the time to eat it or don't wanna prepare myself all that food. It never tastes the same as when someone else cooks it ya know???Liv swam every day for a couple of hours and went on the treadmill(she calls it a chalkboard LOLOLOL cause at my moms when she puts it up it resembles a chalkboard so now all treadmills are called chalkboards to her).She was digging on the hotel life.. She even gave a busload of Japanese tourists the laughs of their lives..We were waiting outside as this group of folks were waiting out too. WELL they were staring a LOT LOT LOT!!! SO me of couse tell her to walk up and say HELLO!!!She walks up LOL to this man says HI gimme 5... He does she laughs likes crazy falls to the floor they laugh and then she was ON. She heard their laughs and jumped up and danced and turned around and shook her BOOTY at all of em more laughs she sang the piiza song they clapped.OH MY GOSH it was like she had the LIVVIE show...BUT they did STOP STARING!!!LOL!!! When Olivia did not get on the bus the first day her man Cody jumped out of his chair when I brought her to school.He said...OLIVIA!!! I was SOOOO worried about you!!!LOL...APPARENTLY he drove the bus driver crazy the first morning she did NOT get on(we drove her to school the last couple of days!!!They just love each other sooo much...It tis the CUTEST thing!!! UMMM ROBIN.... How the heck are you?? Now Chase is enjoying his camp too????Kyle loves his and we got the BEST price on it with the scholarship.He just DIGS on it. My kids are acting sooo much better(Kyle is actually Livs a little better) since daddy is home. KYle just adores his dad as well as Liv... Gotta scoot. BUT wanted to say HELLO!!!! Cecilia..I hated taking Liv to get her shots too but actually she was really good for em. PLUS those beefy thighs probably made the injections less painful..:) TAKE IT EASY!!! Bella just amazes me every day. When she was born, we were expecting a beautiful, healthy,"normal" child. When they took her from us in the OR, I was so afraid. I didn't know what was wrong with her. All they said was she was having problems breathing. Then, after we were in recovery, a nurse came to us and told us they suspected she had Down Syndrome. I was devistated. It sounded so awful, and not ever knowing anyone who has or had children with DS, made it seem even worse. I thought that this only happened to people over 40 or who were addicted to drugs, or drank heavily during pregnancy. How misinformed was I?! She was kept in NICU for 7 long days. She also has AV Septial Canal defect. I was so scared when we brought her home, that I did't sleep for three days. Oh, did I mention she is my first and only child? After two weeks of worry, she was alright, nothing drastic had occured, and I finally got some rest. She is just strong as ever and continues to thrive. She has been working with a physical therapist for over a month, now. She has regular appointments with her cardiologist, and her pediatrician. She is going to start seeing an OT person at the end of the month. She likes to stick her tongue out, alot. She is very alert, and she is starting to roll over. She kicks and punches, quite a bit, too. Her little legs go ninety miles an hour. They did that when I was pregnant with her, as well. All of these things are great, but it is hard to talk to other parents who don't know what it is like. I haven't found a support group, yet. There just doesn't seem like there's enough hours in the day. Is there anyone here from Texas? DFW to be exact. I'd love some input. Especially since she may be having heart surgery in September. | ||

Today I took our beautiful baby doll to her 4 month check-up . She is already 8 1/2 lbs and is doing great! I cried more than her with her shots...She can start eating baby food now. We are excited to try. My five year-old daughter asked us the other day, "what is a baby with DS? We never really told her nor my 3 year-old son anything thinking they were too young to understand. She listens to everything we say and finally she asked. I told her that DS babies are very special babies, just a bit different than other babies that only very special families are lucky enough to have them. She is now telling everyone about how lucky we are that God chose our family to have a special baby. She adores her sister! She feels so lucky. My son loves her a lot too but has more trouble understanding about DS. Hugs and kisses to all your special babies! | ||

Christie~ I Am sooo HAPPY to hear everything has turned out for Chris!! I can't believe(well yes I can) That they would wait to the last minute like that!GRRR!! Your'e an Awesome Mom!! I really havent had any time to get on here!!!!I spend most of the day outside swimming then we have a water park like the one in Ohio right buy our house which is free so I spend my evenings there!! Well I don't think baseball is Mikey's game..he Hates it..Last night he spent most of the time running from his buddy he went ALL the way to the tennis courts..He kept kicking the dirt at him,kept throwing his Mitt and kicking it when his buddy told him to pick it up..And just had a BLAST running his lil butt off cause the field was SOO dry and that made for one HUGE dust strom!!Soo I talked with the coach and I agreed to try 1 more time next week..Well see!! Weahter update...it is really cloudy and gloomy and a bit breezy ..however it si so hot still and they were not forecasting rain, so cros your fingers, my gardens are very sad right now, begging me to make it rain, where are Jackie's fairies at when you need them to do a rain dance??? Cheyanne...your poem was very beautiful...and btw, there is a web site (i have lost the addy) that helps to fix disalbed children/babies up with parents, it is on TV all the time too, sponsered by Wendy's restuarant, maybe somelse here can help wiht the addy for you. And btw, how sweet you have found a mommy cat and her babies to take care of, God does work in mysterious ways. CINDY..... ROFL, you want us to be nice???? Robin -- so sorry I confused you with the other "Annie" but looks like I had a mother's intuition about Chase! Doesn't it just grab at the pit of your stomach when you can't find the l'il stinker -- and there he was right in your backyard all along!!! Adam will pull the same stunt on me too -- NOT answering & he's right there!!! I tell him -- "when Mommy calls you need to answer me" -- He replies "OK Mom!" with the sweetest little smile --- How can ya stay mad when they smile like that?! CC- Sooooo glad Christopher has a GREAT Mommy like you to stick up for him!! WTG! School Districts always seem to operate on the Last Minute senario GRRRR!-- Ours pulled that same kinda stunt 2 years ago in telling us which school Adam would attend (we had one choice -- they wanted another) And they finally made up their mind & hired an aide to boot all within 3 DAYS of school starting!!! Robin -- Thanks for the "update" on Susan's Vacation---It sounds fabulous! But Sharks --in the water-- kinda got me squeemish here! I would be afraid that Adam would try to jump in to be one of them! LOL! He was a Shark in the 1st grade school play ths past spring & yesterday I had him put on his black shorts he wore for the play & he told me "No Mom! These are for my Shark Costume!!" Then after I convinced him to get them on - he said "OK - Now get my Shark costume -- NOW!!" LOL! Luckily I don't own the costume -- one of the very creative Moms at school made them & they are at the school!! :) Adam's Summer camp is going soooo well - that's why I have time to post here LOL! -- he is GONE by 8:45 each morn!! Bus picks him up --- sooooo nice after last year's experience of running him back & forth to services -uuugh! This week the theme is Planets & Stars --- They took Glow in the Dark chalk & created a Universe on the pavement over at the school -- we went last nite around 9:15 pm & it was SOOOOO COOL! All GLOWING so nicely!! Lots of creative drawings -- moons, stars, comets --even few aliens & space ships! Adam had fun pointing out his art work and also his friend's & teachers! It is amazing -- that kid can remember soooo many names of kids & counsolers! He is definetely a people person! When we went to leave -- he was insistant he had to go into the school -- he was SURE that his councilors were there having a sleepover!! :) (They weren't -- but he told us he thought they stayed overnite!! LOLOL!) Gosh -- so many Uno "regulars" are on Vacation or whatever........Jackie, Susan, Radonna, Steff ---- Anyone else I forgot??! *sniff* -- wish I was on Vacation too! -- hopefully we will be getting away for a week in August..... At least RO found here way back here!:) Cindy -- your story was too cute!!! How neat! And if you are out there SHANE'S DAD - Welocome & post up to say "Hi!" We ladies talk alot (well some of them do -- but not me or Robin --- we're the quiet shy type!) So glad you got your FM system...no way that should be such a fight!! I think it's interesting that they contacted you just before DP....hmmmm wonder when they actually made up their mind? It probably didn't bother them too much that you were carrying all the stress of this. just though I'd pop in and say hi, I was trying to catch up on some reading but it's impossible! I've been working like usual no time for fun! My job is offering a buy out that gives you the chance to retire early with no penalties I was ready to jump at it only I don't qualify because I'm too young..Bummer! so I guess I'll be stuck here for another ten long boring years! Well Orlany is doing well she has a problem with attitude but we're working on it. She's off to summer school T.G. she wares me out.. We cherished each moment and for us it was real, For a small little moment we prayed for our son, We longed to be with him... in our hearts we were one. In our hearts we adopted our boy from the start, He grew in our minds and we held him close in our heart, We spread the word round to please offer a prayer, For this wee little baby may God’s will be served there. And even though he now lives with his mom and his dad, We are happy for him and for all that he had... For he was our son for awhile in our minds, He had four parents and all the prayers you could find. How lucky to be in the midst of that love, And Gods greatest blessing sent from above. So we thank you dear caseworkers for all that you do, One day we still hope that our dreams will come true. So next time the Lord sends a child to you, We hope you will think of us, but whatever you do... Say a prayer for the will of the Lord to be done, We just know he will send us a daughter or son. In his time and not ours things are bound to work out, We thank you dear caseworkers we know things always work out! Yet here I was sewing curtains and buying baby toys and laughing about all of the wonderful things that we would do. He lived in our hearts and I think the hardest part was knowing we couldn’t be there to tell him we loved him too when he was in ICU. A friend of mine suggested I write letters to him, but she laughed when I told her I already did. So I found a way to be with him through my writing. I just know that in God's time we will be blessed with the 'right' baby or child for our family. Life is full of opportunities but sometimes you just have to look a little harder for the blessing. The Lord always opens a window when he closes a door. We found a cat with three baby kittens, plus we still have hope that our baby will come when the time is right. Anyway, to keep this from being a terribly loooooong MEGA story --- The family was just sooooo "impressed" (can't think of a better word -- how about "charmed"? LOL!) by us & Adam that the end of the story was a happy one -- she opted to continue the pregnancy -- they DID think of Adoption as a possible answer....Their baby was born 3 years ago this coming Fall....He did have a heart condition & has had surgery --- came thru it beautifully. I haven't talked to them since last summer - they live on the other side of town -- but bet we will see them soon at one of our Annual functions that our group has here.... So -- I was thinking perhaps you should contact your Ob/Gyn OR ANY Ob/Gyn would would listen -- Tell him/her your interest & intentions to adopt a DS child.... (OK - tell me you already did this & this is how you came to this board! LOL!) Well, so much for my 2 cents worth!! Hope the "story" didn't bore ya too terribly much! I believe God ALWAYS has a plan -- so don't worry -- just leave it to Him!! :) At any rate, you have met a bunch of nice people here! it is mornings like these that I thank God for Chase's summer camp three days a week. I just dont know what gets in to him at times, he just turns into a devil child doing as much wrong as fast as he can and running from me!!! Grrrrrr, I was VERY happy to turn him over to camp this morning ( smiling real big as I did!) He got up, pooped on the floor, wiped toothpaste all over the mirror in the bathroom, knocked his brother off the couch, hid under the table from me, locked himself in my bedroom, and ran out the patio door so I had to go catch him. (yes he is still alive) Why ever does he do these things???? Man, he has me wore out already, and I need a nap!!!!( or at least stronger drugs :-) Ro... :-p shister, LOLOL!! Where ya been brat??? You are learning to swim?? Good for you!!! And wtg to those boys of yours!!!!! Tedddy still there for the summer??? I think when you bring him home, you should do it over Labor Day and go the scenic route, drive right thru Dayton Ohio and stop for the day!!!! No, really, I mean it, Ro!! Stop laughing!!! Think about it kid, where can you meet better people then Dayton Ohio On Labor Day weekend????? Mary L!!! I thought you would stick up for me, not pick on me, LOLOL, I am way bumming that you cant meet us, but we are also thinking of doing a thanks giving weekend too :-) Susan and I just cant get enough of one another and all of you !!!!!!! My email changed, I think, it is still nathanielsmom but @shaw.ca now. Nathaniel is growing like a weed :) We just had a bronc the day before I left for Nashville and his trachea is still collapsing, the trach was out for 5 minutes, so now I think the Dr is looking at reconstructive, we will know more in Sept. I am not on any sites now, but the feeding issues one and I came back here ;) I LOVED getting to go to Nashville :) Paul Brandt was there for the open ( to sing ) and he is from HERE :p I flew into Dallas and had a one hr stop over. IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOT tho, man oh man...it was like you were drinking the air :p But it was a great conf. LOL chapless is painting again, started up his business and has been going really good. It has been a very ruff few years but hopefully things will start to turn around now... LOLOLOL Key lime pie...I forgot all about that... Ro.... The father is much older than mom and he is nearing his 60's, travels out of town a bit and they didn't feel they would be there for the child. They also did not want to burden mother's teenage daughter. I guess they just didn't feel they would be able to care for this child. Thank you for all of your support. I wrote to the Down Syndrome Association in Cinncinatti to see if there is any other babies that may be available. I know that in GODS time anything is possible. (I think that is the hardest part... just waiting for the right time.) My dh did want to give this a rest for awhile only because this is the second adoption that we have come so close to and has failed. Who knows what tomorrow will bring! I hope our situation reminds you how lucky you are to be parents. Every child is certainly a gift from God and DS is just a label. I guess like a ds child, my dh and I need to learn to hang in there a little longer and KEEP TRYING to achieve the success we hope to find. The road may be rocky, but I know in the end it will be worth the wait. Thanks again! Have a great day! | ||

RO, Have you learned the back stroke yet, thats my favorite :-) Happy Swimming CHEYANNE, (((HUGS))) To You. AMY, I have found that most people don't mean anything bad, things just come out out of peoples mouths meaning something different then what we heard. Hope that made sense. YIKES some of the things I have heard people say but never have I run across anyone that was purposely hurtfull. I can only hope not, but before Chris I might of said something to someone that didn't come out right too.
