My son has the WIDE feet. His Dr had also suggested the Stride Rite shoes, so I guess I'll go with the general consenus and try them! As for arguing about food, he's rather picky and if there's an arguement it's usually because he doesn't want something, then his thing is to throw it over the side of his high chair. We're having a hard time breaking him of that!
As for the head tilt, I've never noticed that, but we seem to have been blessed (so far) with good eyes, teeth, and hearing. I think the AV canal defect was our only problem. It was enough! And now that his surgery is done, we can relax on that count!

Hi....

Oh BARB!!!!! LOLOL!!!! Can I tell you this?? Liv was the SAME WAY!!!! She usta argue bout food when she signed too!!!LMAO OHHHHH You are in for a funny frustrating hysterically rewarding life ahead... Now an added bonus... On EVERY EVAL IEP etc it always says... OLIVIA KNOWS WHAT SHE WANTS and is able to express herself to get her needs met...LOL.. Now even when she was small about Alisons age it was really apparent she knew what she wanted and would drag you to, point to do, whatever she had to to get her DEMANDS( usually about food) met without holding any hostages....or just a few but they usually were willingly held.LOL.. Hugs girl you just brought back memories..

Hey I have a question for you all. Any of you ever noticed your kids develop a head tilt??? the last month or so I am noticing it big time in Liv. First thought it was just my imagination then looked at video and wow its very noticeable. She's going for another aai neck x ray this week. Her new ped wanted one and I would prefer to rule out aai before heading to the eye doctors. Liv HATES the drops at the eye docs. And I think I'm in denial about her vision just getting really bad.... she started out with her specs at 10 months. Her vision was 3.75 in the farsightedness game and had some astigmatism. WELL I thought they would get better as she dare I say..LMAO AGED????? NOPE her eyes last time went in one year from a 7.25 farsighted to 8.75... Just gets worse and worse. Hmm just curious. Her neck x rays have been fine and this will be #3. Although they did a lower back one a few years back that showed spina bifida occulta. Wonder perhaps she is prone to back probs???? hmmm.. just wondering out loud.nighty night

Hi Valerie and Courtney and Valerie and Nicholas, welcome to unomas.
Valerie, Chase used to get speech twice and week and OT twice a week when he was Courtney's age. And yes by all means state what you want to be put in Courtney's IEP, remember you have the final say. If you feel your daugther needs it, then you dig your heels rihgt in and insist. Remember that unfortunately the squeaky wheel gets the grease so dont be afraid to squeak loud
:-D :-D :-D
Valerie, Nicholas's mom, does he have wide feet or skinny feet? In Chase's case he has the most narrow feet you've ever seen and our problem was never finding them wide enough but narrow enough. Now that he is using orthotics we are lucky as it isnt a problem because of his narrow feet, he can wear just about any shoe. The problem now is that he thinks he has to have the coolest and most expensive, like his brothers:-D Our youngest son who doesnt have DS has the widest feet however and we too have found stride rite to be the place to find cool and wide shoes:-D
Brenda, I feel for you with the husky size pants. I have found some pants at Target that are all elastic waisted and the right length too but so many times most of them are either too long or the right length and way too long. I think we should be able to purchase sewing machines and write them off on our taxes, what do you think? :-)
Suzi ...your Old Navy Store carries shoes? How cool! Does your Old Navy have a old car in the store that is there just for looks like ours does? (Can you guess where I am going with this???) While shopping in there as they were havng a HUGE sale, Chase sat down next to the rack I was looking thru so I took my eyes off of him I swear for about thirty seconds and then looked back down and bam, he was gone!!! I knew it was just for a second so I looked quickly up and down the nearest aisles, sure that I would see him and when I didnt I started to freak out cause you know how fast he is. As I was heading to the check out to tell the cahsiers I had a missing kid and plesae watch the doors while I started searching....I passed by the old car and out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a movement. I stopped looked back and saw nothing so I started to go and sure enough caught another peek. I raced over to that car and there he was hiding on me. Once I convinced him it was in his behind's best interest to come out and then taught him how to use the old lock on the car door, I got him out, grrrrrrrrrr. Why do I ever think I can take that boy shopping for clothes? Toys, yes, vidoes, yes, food, yes but never clothes.
Barb....I bet Ali-oops will be walking before her second birthday too!!! I cant wait to see her and see how big she is! LOL to your first argument with you, how sweet and how samrt is that girl!!!!!
Steff it is the weekend and I havent seen you post :-D How is school going?
Connie are you guys coming with us in July, please say yes? And how about you Kristi???
Okay, kids nad DH are home so my peace is over. Hugs to all, have a great Sunday
Robin

In addition to the trouble of fitting shoes over orthotics we needed to get Merideth riding boots that would fit over them. Surprisingly we found 2 pairs that were cut wide enough to work this season. One pair was from Old Navy & look like traditional riding boots. The other looks more western with suede fringe around the top & came from their sister store GapKids.
We've also found Sketchers that look like MaryJanes to work for Spring dress shoes.

Welcome Valerie! About shoes: Meghan is 4 and wears orthotics so, in addition to already wide feet, we need *wider* shoes, LOL...she's only allowed to wear sneakers w/ the orthotics so I find the Stride Rite work well because they come in wide sizes...Nike also makes a style called "Pico" for boys & girls and they come in wide widths also. New Balance is another but sometimes they're hard to find in wide widths...even sneaker places like Foot Locker don't even carry them in wide. Unfortunately they're all fairly $$ but she needs them so I just have to bite the bullet...I buy some of my son's shoes at Target -- some of them are wider (he's 22 months and has a wide foot too)...just don't get the light up kind because they're so un-flexible they're usually not good for our kids.
hope to hear more of you...glad your son is doing well. laurie

Hi, this is my first time on this site. Looks like a great place to share info. My son had his open heart surgery Jan 25, was in the toy room 3 days later, and started walking the week we came home. No more crawling. Guess he has more energy now! Now that we've got the "big" problem behind us, I can move on to other things. Does anyone have a hard time finding shoes to fit their child, and if so, where are you finding good ones at?

Hi gang!
Gotta share a funny with you all! This morning after breakfast, I put Alison down on the floor to play. Well she very quickly made her way over to the cabinet where the cookies are kept and started pointing to it and signing "cookie" and jabbering away. I told her, no, no cookies now. Well, didn't she start signing, yes, cookie, yes, cookie, over and over to me!!! I wish you guys could have seen the expression on her face while telling me this!!! Again I told her no, it's not cookie time, after lunch you can have a cookie. Well, lunchtime comes, and after she finished her ravioli's ( her very favorite lunch!), didn't the little booger start signing "cookie" and "time"!!! Now, we've never worked on the sign for time, but she has seen it many times since Christmas when we watch her "Signing Time" videos so I was totally floored when I saw her do it!!! Once I stopped laughing, you guys can be sure she got an extra cookie for all her troubles! Then tonight as I was sitting at work waiting for that last, long minute to go by before I could leave, it dawned on me that Alison and I had had our first "arguement" and she's not even really talking ( at least in "words") yet!!! I just started laughing again. Alison has also started pulling to stand and is cruising the furnitures and going along the walls! It looks like she just might take those first few steps by herself before her 2nd birthday! I'm not so sure I'm really ready for it, but boy, oh boy, I can't wait!!!

Hi everyone, My dtr. just started pre-k when she turned 3 y/o last month. I was wondering about the amount of therapy she receives. They give her 2 half hour group sessions for speech a week. One half hour of ot. That is one on one. They plan to add one more half hour session of ot a week when and if they can fit it in. Does that sound like the normal amount? I asked for speech 3 times a week and ot 2 times a week. Also I've been thinking about paying out of pocket for speech one time a week. Has anyone tried that and has it helped. Courtney was using about 20 words and for some reson has stopped. I'm starting to get worried that she is going to fall behind. I know some of you have been down this road and I would appreciate any info.
ps Should I have what i want for her put into her IEP? Or is that for what they are giving her only.
Thanks Valerie

Annie S..... HIYA Girlfriend!!!! Long time no chat is right!!! I so miss those huge chats where we all couldnt fit in one chat room here! I am soooo glad your heart has done so well, that is fantastic news!! You have been in my thoughts and prayers and I am so glad to hear you are doing well. So you think Chase has filled out huh? LOLOL, that is one way to put it, LOL!!! If I had my way though, he would of NEVER took that darn Depokote and got so "fluffy", I am hoping we can get about ten pounds of it off by the end of summer, he would be at the perfect sixe I think then. He is wearing a tight 12 husky right and all the weight is in his belly, poor kid is built just like his mom:-D I am thrilled to hear Sonny is doing so great!!! I am not surprised he slowed down on his height though, he is so much taller then Chase, lucky boy! Chase is still so short. How is school doing for Sonny? I think you should think about joining Susan and A and I and the rest of the crew in July for a great get together, will you think about it? It has been wayyyyyy too long Annie and we need to keep connected so when we all retire we can retire together to a warm wonderful place filled with great people with DS and us. (OKay, it's my dream even if it probably wont ever happen!)
Laurie.... (((HUGE HUGS))) to you and your Mom!!! She is in all my prayers. I am so glad she has you so close!!! LOL to your own bedroom, so what does Matthew think of his own room? BTW.... exactly how much snow did you end up with? I am home today because our whole county is snowed in :-D We ended up with 10 to 13 inches, depending on where you lived. It is beautiful but holy toot, it needs to melt and let us out. TG we haave tons of groceries because everything is closed. I bet good ole Laura Snowbird is in her glory:-D
And btw....it is great snowman making stuff:-)
Steff.....Chase is really good at index card memorization (that is part of how he learned to read so great at such a early age)so maybe I should send him to you to help with your studies??? LOL, I am kidding! You are going to do great, as smart as you are, there are no worries.
LOL to Liv and her garbage bags :-D :-D :-D She is the funniest kid!!!! I sure wish we lived closer!!!!
Son #2 (David) bought a house and moved in over the weekend, and we watched the new grand baby Grant for them overnightand all day, now I remember why old people shouldnt have babies, NOT that I am calling myself old mind you, I was thinking more of CC and Susan :-D
Connie....are you coming to the get together> PLeeeze say yes!!!! Not, maybe, not we'll see, but "YES MAM, WE WOULDN'T MISS IT" type answer please!!!!:-D I cant wait to see the kids and see how big my man is, does he still love to cuddle???
Okay, kids are screaming for attention,
hus to all, Robin

Steff - too too funny!!! She's a clever girl :-) about anatomy...I used to make my own flash cards...I'd copy my stuff onto index cards, with my own made up pneumonics, etc. The copying helped me learn, then I'd study from them and have my mom and Dh "quiz" me. Doesn't work for everyone but it was great for me. plus my cards were portable and I could bring them everywhere...just a thought.
It's snowing...snowing...5 inches so far. Not sure when it's supposed to end. they said 5-8" so we'll see. Only good thing is it's finally SNOWMAN snow!! i've been promising the kids a snowman all winter and it's been cruddy snow. I can't wait! Then it can all melt and never come back, lol! It just better not start raining before we can get out there.
hope everyone is well - hugs - laurie

Hi!!!!

Thinking I am gonna need some help in anatomy...Oh man...so much to memorize...YIKERS!!!!

Just had to share a funny that just happened.... I am getting Olivia ready for bed. Now she wears a goodnight diaper at night only.. This child has the body of the little teapot... Anyhow I ran out of diapers since she only wears one a day I forget sometimes. WELL when she had stayed with my mom when Jeff and I grabbed a few days away in San Diego my mom bought these diapers that said briefs on the front but when she opened em they llok like GIANT DIAPERS TAPE and ALL. Well I go find them take it out and Liv said in really high pitched slightly whiny voice (for Liv)" MOM not the TRASHBAGS!!!!!!! LMAOROTFLOL!!!! Cracked me up.... They do resemble trashbags... Gotta go she will not stop talking to herself and if she is talking to me and I don't answer she knows she just says...HEY STEPHANIE CAN I whatever it is she wants. Doin it to me right now. Crazy kid. Nighty night

Marcy - I don't know if it was you who had said it....but about the audio tapes for love & learning, that Bethany doesn't nap so you don't do them? Have you tried playing them in the car when you're driving around? I do that occasionally, just to get them in...although I'm not very stringent about it. just a thought.
Robin - haven't looked at the Chase pics yet, but am gonna in a few minutes. thanks for sharing :-)
Mom's doing OK, not great -- they found a new spot on her liver so that's not good...but she started a new chemo. Hopefully that will help keep it at bay. Didn't expect a new one to show up so soon...so tough to deal with. And she's having nasty reactions from the new chemo....which is unusual for this type. So we'll see. thanks for the prayers. We need them! hugs!
Steff - good luck with school!! If you need anatomy help let me know...was one of my very favorite classes -- I took a year of it for pharmacy school, and a semester when I got my associates degree...THe only problem w/ that class (it was anat/physiology) was I ended up thinking I had every bizarre, rare disease they would describe....too funny.
Good for you in letting that teacher know she was incorrect, in a very diplomatic way
Annie - glad you are doing well and healing up....you're in my thoughts and prayers.
Not much going on here. Hubby is painting Matthew's bedroom...he's finally moving out of our room (hooray!)....we have a weird living situation here with mom and grandma sharing the house (they have their own apartment) but we needed the extra bedroom for when my brothers come to visit so Matthew had his crib in our room. We finally got things sorted out...and I will have my very own bedroom for the first time in YEARS! (unfortunately I have to share with DH though, LOL!). I feel bad though, because I'm not allowed to help paint. I was at the chiropractor today and the ulnar nerve in my right arm is inflamed and I'm not supposed to do much until it calms down. My whole elbow was rotated or suponated or something....jeez I should know if I took so much anatomy, LOL....but atleast now I know what all the pain was from :-)
ok -- well, gotta finish up dinner. hope everyone is doing great -- laurie

Hi Julie:
thank you for your response. I know there are organizations for assisted living - my brother used to work for one of them. But, I was wondering if anyone was living independently without extra assistance. I actually received some responses - which I'm sure you read that gave me a positive answer. I just want to know what the range of hopes for the future are. I've decided I'm going to shoot for the stars and I will continue to encourage Bethany to do the same as well as she grows. Thanks for the info . . . - Marcy.

HI!!!!

Well I am officially back in school. Drag this is probably the last post till the weekends cause man I have so much work. I have 10 units left so I took em all at once not sure I should be doing this but heck I wanna be done with these requirements and into either a state college a bit of a distance from here or UCLA which alas is far beyond my realm of financial dreams. Oh well I did apply for some grants for next year and got them and the schools I have been accepted to(WAAAA with the exception of ucla) are gonna give me some other financial paperwork I hafta fill out by march which should pretty much lessen the financial burden to something doable for me...I have an anatomy class worth 5 units and 2 child development classes 3 units each one is really good . It is called Strategies for Including children with special Needs. Great book. Although the teacher used the term NORMAL a million times in class when comparing our kids to TYPICAL kids. That is one word that bugs me out. I did in the end when she asked what we were planning on doing with our majors tell her I have a child with ds.And she also went to the TYPICAL classroom and was included... Kinda reworded her words. A couple of people cracked up I guess the tone of my voice was a bit stern when referring to TYPICAL rather than normal.Such a stupid thing for me to get buggy about but I really tolerate most things, just i dunno guess I thought a woman with 2 masters degrees teaching this class would have a better choice of words. Figured my other 2 classes are so hard might as well take a class where I know exactly what the teacher is talking about when she refers to proximinal zones, IEP's IFSP's,scaffolding , pacing preference inventories...LOL... FEEL like a genius there now the anatomy class is a different story although having Olivia and jeff in my life have helped me tremendously with terms and things I never woulda known.Whoda thunk all those times with them in the hospital would help me in my anatomy class. Guess it all sunk in... LOL....Plus it always helps to have a bro who's a ped's nurse to help me study for tests....

Enough of me I just wanted to forewarn you I'll be away then back sometimes on the weekends for some fierce posts...

BRENDA!!!!!! HEY!!!!! Oh man it has been sooo long.... For the ursing...hmmmm... what helps me most with Olivia is to ignore it. By not making a big production out of it and getting the response she OHHH SOOO WANTS she just gives up and sometimes apologizes without me saying a single word. Its funny too cause she'll get miffed I am not answering or responding in any way to negative words or behaviors and she do em louder and louder then she';; talk to this amazing "good angel" she has to the right of her with her hand over her mouth like she's passing a secret on to her friend next to her and say "Olivia that was not nice tell your mommy sorry' ... then she'll say ALLLLLLLright and come give me a hugger and apologize. Gotta love this angel to her right always gives herself great advice. We live in Los Angeles where every person drives with cell phones hanging off their ears and trying to get ahead of the next guy on the road and man I have had to learn to tone down my driving mouth....After liv called a couple of people some choice words when we were driving I thought I had best do that....Y awanna know how bad I am?? When someone cuts me off badly and almost gets me in an accident or does something really dangerous I drive up next to em then I give Liv the go ahead to WAVE say HI blow kisses. Just a gentle reminder that they should be more careful. As much as they hate to look over for fear I am gonna curse em out they always manage to see her wave back and we usually get a sorry... hee

ROBIN I LOVE YA!!!!! I gotta go back to the books but have a great week!!! steff

Marcy.................Just read your message from way back (11 Feb). Just wanted you to know that over here in NZ we have adults with Down syndrome living independantly, (even marrying!) There are several organisations that support them into this running courses on budgeting, cooking etc. They do have support available and are checked up on regularly. I am sure if we have such organisations you have. I know one mother who's daughter with down syndrome was in a flat and her mother had gone on holiday and when she came back she found out her daughter had decided on icecream with a glass of wine every morning for breakfast!! Good on her I say, shes 21, she can have it if she wants!

Kristin:
I have the first two packets of love and learning! I came across it when Bethany was a couple of months old. I had been very dedicated to doing it every day - but I have become neglectful the past few months. I really didn't know if it was doing anything for her (since she's so young). But now that I see that it is actually working for Cole, I am going to get back to doing it tomorrow! I'm actually excited about it now! I was very consistent with the word books. Bethany was not really interested in the videos. She also doesn't really "nap" during the day so I wasn't using the audio tapes either (they suggest playing them while the kids are going down for a nap) - but now I think I'll stick on the audio tapes a couple of times a day while she's playing (I usually have on either classical music or Sesame Street music). I am excited to start it again! When did you realize that Cole was getting something out of it? When did you begin using it? Bethany is not talking yet (other than mama and dada and a little babbling) so I won't be able to know what she is absorbing right now. Also - I would certainly e-mail you - but I don't have your e-mail address. With regard to the support group you have, I don't know if you are in my area. I'm in Williamsville, N.Y. Actually, I am in a parent/child group at Born Hava school and the parents there are very nice too. There is one woman who has been trying to get a bunch of moms together for an evening and I would certainly participate in that if it comes to fruition. You can e-mail me directly as well if you want. Hope to hear from you soon . . .
- Marcy.

Marcy ~ I am so glad that you liked those videos. Also, if you ever want to contact me by personal email, please feel free to. In our area, we have a really strong support group of parents with children around Bethany's age, about 10-12 kiddos, and we are all very willing to be there for you, if you ever need someone to talk to. Bethany is at a great age to start on a really cool program that some of us have had a lot of luck with, if you are interested. It is a letter recognition, early reading program developed for young children (yes, even one-year olds!) with Down Syndrome and other disabilities. My son has been using it for 1 1/2 years now, and he knows the ABC's, and can "read" about 40-50 sight words, without picture cues. Knowing that you're interested in promoting Bethany's learning skills and helping her reach her highest potential, I thought you might like it. It is a little expensive, but sometimes county support agencies will help pay for it. It is called loveandlearning.com If you have any other questions, post here or email me!

If you go to www.saginawspirits.com and click on scrapbook a bunch of hockey pictures will pop up and if you click on the one that says "Asselin and friends" it is a picture of Chase and his friend Drew who is 15 and has DS and Marek (the hockey player that comes to see Chase at school all the time) I was so excited when I got the email telling me Chase was on their web site.
Susan....LOL to your im, I think Emily has the best social life, she goes to girlscouts, she gets invited to every birthday party and Chase has still not gotten a birthday party invite :-( she is on a basketball team, a soccer team, swims every week. I still think though, ....her AND Chase's social life would be fantastic if you would just move here to Michigan. I cant move yet cause we would lose Nichole and what would we do without her in Chase's life is beyond me, so you guys move here, the pay is wayyyyy better then Tenn, Terry's mom and sister would be so happy, (not to mention I would be ESCTASTIC) Emily and chase could go every where together and that would mean he has a real friend (sigh)and best of all, you and I could go SHOPPING together all the time. (ops, I forgot, the stores are five mintues away from us) so, besides the weather which is almost getting good right now, you have no reason to say no, when do you want me to help you guys pack? :-)
STEFFY........ where are you? It is not like you to not be here!
So Barb, do you think you'll be able to make the trip in July?
Laurie, how is your mom doing? She is still in my prayers.
Suzi, if that wasnt the sweetest picture of Meri I ever saw sitting like a big girl on her pony!!!!!
Cathy, has the snow melted enough for you to dig your way out and come visit us soon?
Jello ....how was your anniversary and when are we going to meet in Frankenmuth again? Say soon!!!! You, me, Dave and Chuck, no kids, what do you say????We can just walk around and window shop and go somewhere to eat dinner and it doesnt have to be Frankenmuth if you want. Or heck, we can do a movie too, you know, pretend we are grownups:-D
Okay I work the second shift today, we are having a dinner dance for my students, a soda shop sock hop from the fifties and I am going to stop in and see my beautiful new grandson Grant first. BTW.... how are our new babies doing, Chris and Annette's both!
hugs, Robin

I hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day. My DH brought home ribeyes and crab legs and we had a romantic meal with the kids, complete with candles and all, the kids thought it was lots of fun:-D
Laura and Cathy and anyone else whooshing this storm that is descending down upon us, take it back!!! Even another snow day isn't worth freezing rain followed by 8 inches of that disgustingly nasty cold white stuff!!!!
Hugs to all,

Oh Claire and Steff....your stories made me crack up. What sweet funny kids we have!!!!!
I guess I have been gone a bit too long again because there were tons of posts to read!!!!
Maria first...I am so sorry your dear Dad passes away. You and your family are in my prayers. Hugs to you, I sure wish I could be there for you bud.
Steff...when does Jeff go in for his surgery, isnt it coming soon? He is also still in my prayers! Let me know okay? Once again, I sure wish we all lived closer so I could be there to watch those two kiddos for you.
I read the post about expectations for our kids.... I have been shooting for the moon for Chase since he was born and while I realize there are a few things he will never be able to do, there is TONS he can and will do... and for those of you who dont know, Chase also has ADHD, is bi polar AND has senory issues. He will go to prom though, he does talk on the phone now, and I am sure he will do it more and longer the older he gets, he will and does go to the mall now with friends (and a adult) to play at the arcade and check out the cool stuff, and I completely have to believe he will lie independently with some help and as for getting married, ha, he has been engaged to Susan's beautiful Emily for several years and once we decide where we are all going to live when we retire, they will be homeowners because there is alot of progrmas out there to help and if the state we choose doenst have a program, well then, Susan and I will help them make a program to help the disabled population become home owners :-)
Chase is over his pnemonia and doing good, he has become an avid hockey fan with the help of his teacher who has players from Canada living with her and gives us free tickets and passes to meet with them after every game. She has also taught Chase how to access their web site and he knows the name of every player:-)
They also come to school once a week as a reward for Chase's good behavior, can you believe I said good behavior and Chase in the same sentence? There were years when I thought we would never see these days...:-D
He still has no safety skills, but wow he has a better social life then we do!!!!! Life for Chase is good guys, really good!!!!
Okay we are home because of a terrible ice storm last night, Laura and Jello Jack, did you guys get it too?? Great Valentine Gift:-D Anyways you two, I think we need to meet for the day and hang out, so we need to plan this, Okay? I miss every one terrible!!!!! Susan and A and I and several others are meeting this summer so maybe you guys can make it too???
Cindy, Hey there!!! I did think you fell off the planet, I bet your little guy is half grown up by now :-D
I wonder how Ro is and Car..any one talk to them lately?
Hugs to all,
Robin

I posted a link to an article about college programs for children with disabilities on the bulletin board. Please check it out - stuff like that encourages me and reminds me that NO ONE has any idea what my child's potential is at this age. That is all yet to be determined! I believe there will be far more opportunities like this when our kids are grown!

Laurie, Kristin and Jessie: Thank you all for responding to me. It really helps to have support when things like this happen. Sometimes things like this make you feel so alone and helpless. I feel the same way all of you expressed yourselves . . . that it is impossible to predict the future or Bethany's potential at this point in her life. But, at the same time, it just cannot benefit her (or me for that matter) to limit my dreams and expectations of her. I will continue to shoot for the stars - but at the same time just work my tail off to make her the best Bethany she can be. It is very hard not to worry about the future - but I will try to take things one step at a time. Thank you all again - and I will look at that karengaffney.com website tonight. Thanks for the suggestion.

Marcy - Oh, somehow this teacher has a magic crystal ball that can see into the future? Amazing..wish I had one.
I don't think that teacher was very nice or encouraging...no, not all adults with DS can live on their own, or whatever...but some do! One of my good friends, who lives in TX, has 2 friends w/ kids w/ DS. The 'boys' live together in their own apartment (not assisted living!), take public transportation to and from their jobs, go to ARC dances, have a social life...one of them is ALSO attending a local college.
Jackie's (who posts on the BB) Emily, who is in her early 20's is living 700 miles from home and working as (i think, and apologize Jackie if I'm getting this wrong) a house manager. She flies between her work-home and parents home at holidays etc, by herself, and also attended a 2-yr college, and lived in the dorms (?). It IS possible...I mean life probably won't be the same as it is for most typical teenagers and young adults, but it can be somewhat close. Depends on what type of CHANCES and ENCOURAGEMENT we give our children...and when there are people like that teacher who have outdated attitudes and stand in our way...that's when we run into trouble. And just think...hopefully when your darling daughter is in her teens and 20s...maybe the attitude of the outside world will have changed some, and people will become more and more accepting of our children and not look at the challanges but at what they CAN accomplish!
When Meghan was born I didn't know what to expect...she just turned 4 and is doing really well. She's in an integrated preschool (1/2 typical kids, 1/2 w/ disabilities)...she's starting to READ, can count to 20 and knows her whole alphabet, colors, shapes, etc. yes, she's still behind typical kids her age, but she's doing so much and so well...and will continue to do so because she has her family and teachers and therapists that support and love her.
DOn't let this teachers words get you down or get in the way of what you want for your daughter...maybe she was trying to be "helpful" (in her mind) by giving you a harsh dose of reality...or reality as she sees it. And maybe these ARE things she has seen but it doesn't mean it always has to be that way. Do most adults w/ DS live in asst. living, group homes or with family? Probably yes. Do they all? NO! Alot of adults w/ DS have jobs, at different levels, different responsibilities...some get married, have bank accounts, manage their own households, etc. Will it be a little different for some of our kids, probably...
My other words of advice would be not to think so much about what might be in the future..difficult to do, I know. What will be, will be...but focus on the here and now and helping your child to acheive everything she needs to grow and learn...and also remember to ENJOY this age....they grow too too quickly!!
And, if this lady is as annoying or discouraging as she sounds (unless she's really GOOD at her job) remember, it's your right as a parent to request a new teacher.
Enough outta me...hope this helped some. laurie

Marcy, You have every reason to expect that your daughter can live an independent life. Educators, doctors, specialists, etc. do not know the potential that your daughter has. In fact, with all of the early intervention available to this newest generation of children with down syndrome, I think there may be many individuals that will surprise a lot of us with all they can do!! You have to expect a lot in order to get a lot, and even if she doesn't meet your expectations, it is not because you have "limited" her by any preconceived notions about how much an individual with DS can or cannot do. I live near the Denver area, and know of a young woman with DS who works, and drives (her own red Mustang convertible!!), and does extremely well! No one can tell a parent with a "typical" child that they will be able to live independently... this life is too uncertain to guarantee that to ANYONE!! Focus on what she can do now, keep your expectations high, and support and love her like you are doing!! She is lucky to have you for a mommy! :)
P.S. Do a search for Karen Gaffney, I think it might even be karengaffney.com. She is an amazing self advocate that travels the country speaking about how much individuals with DS can accomplish. Her website is amazing. I know that she is speaking at the Buddy Walk and related Down Syndrome Celebration in Sacramento this month.

Marcy, I'm sorry you felt so discouraged after talking to the specialist. I think 1 years old is a little young to say that your daughter will never be able to live a full, independant life. However, I'm sure that the professionals have the obligation to be as straight forward as they can be and not to give unrealistic expecations either. It's kind of a catch 22 situation. My advice is to just help your daughter live the fullest life that SHE can, not in comparison to any other child, with or without DS. Yes, there may be some things that she won't be able to achieve that are YOUR dreams, but there may be some wonderful things that she will achieve that will be just as rewarding and fulfilling for both of you. There are DS adults who live active, less dependant lives, look at Chris Burke the actor, look at Emily, whose mom posts on here, look at Debbie who as DS and posts here. These people are examples of just how far people with DS can go. However, there are just as many individuals who can't progress that far and no one can predict that for a child as young as 1 years old. With your help, your child will grow to her full potential, whatever that turns out to be, and you will be just as proud of her accomplishments no matter what those turn out to be.

Hello everyone. My daughter, Bethany, just turned 1 last week. I haven't posted on this board since she was a newborn. Bethany is doing very well so far - but I was hoping someone would have some encouraging words - or at least information for me with regard to a discouraging incident that happened today... Today my special ed teacher told me that she doesn't know any adults with DS that can live on their own and it is probably an unrealistic expectation. Also, she said that it is probably an unrealistic expectation that a child with DS can have a relatively "normal" teenage life. For example, I told her that I want my daughter to chat on the phone too long with her girlfriends, go to the mall, go to her prom, have dates with boys - and if she is blessed with the potential - to go to college and maybe even live in a dorm. (I did quite a bit of reading when my daughter was born and the books said that there are high functioning DS people who are on the "low end of average" and can lead relatively normal lives and can live on their own and have jobs.) My educator was very, very skeptical that independent living was possible and focused on assisted living situations. I understand that it is a possibility and that Bethany's potential is uncertain at this point since she is only a baby - but I can't (don't want to) give up my hopes and dreams for her. I quit my job to stay home with her and work with her and so far she is typical. I don't want to give up the hope that with lots of more work I can help to keep her as typical as possible. Am I being unrealistic or just fooling myself? Please, if anyone has any success stories for me, I'd really appreciate the support. I am clinging to my dreams for her and I just want to know if I am just being completely blind that they might be a real possibility. Thanks for reading . . .

Hi,Haven't posted for a very long time years! Just wanted to say HI.I See a few names I remember and a whole lot of new.Looks like everyone is doing well. well at least from the few entries I've read through so far.Billy is doing prity well Healthy :)This has been his first year in public school,Always went to Christian school,And it's really been tough it's brought out alot of things weve never delt with before.First it was that he was to freindly hugging and kissing,Wandering away .Then he started being agressive wrestling back with the boys and girls. Now cussing,I still haven't heard it but I beleive what their saying,It seems he's getting worse and worse mimicing everything he sees there ,I guess to be to be like everyone else,I just don't know and the only thing I know is home school. But Oh I so wanted him to be able to be with the other kids,he asks to go back to his other school most every morning .But that just isn't possible anymore. Hey sorry for venting and hope I don't bring anyone down.Just don't have anyone, anymore to talk to about him that might have a clue as to the DS.Our lives have really changed in the last year and a half.Take Care Brenda

I was feeling mighty blue tonight just a lotta stuff going on and I sat my head on the kitchen table and just cried. WELL... gotta give it to Olivia she does not like anyone to cry or be sad she just hasta make em feel better. So she walks into the room unbeknownst to me. I look up tears flowing and she gives me the sweetest hug and wipes my tears then starts to sing this song to me as she gently rubs my cheek. I even wrote it down after cause well you'll see.....This is sung to the tune of HUSH LITTLE BABY... here goes..

Hush little baby.. come blow your horn...

Mommas gonna buy you a piece of corn and if that corn will not sing mommas gonna buy you a chicken wing.

I ROTFLOLPIMP..... and she sang it soo sweetly and when I laughed she was soo happy she made me smile we rolled on the floor together and lol....

These cards are designed to give first responders the info they need to better provide timely and appropriate services to your care recipient. It provides space for critical info. a recent photo, and thumprints., card can be updated as condition changes and as they age etc. These cards can be downloaded at

Just something funny that happened this weekend and I thought I'd share it with you. I took Adam grocery shopping and although it can be quite the adventure this time was different. I always let him push the cart, put things in the basket for me and make him count stuff like tomatoes and such and he puts it in the bag for me. It teaches him life skills and keeps him out of trouble or run away.(LOL) We got to the produce department and I told him' Adam put 4 tomatoes in the bag for mommy" He did" Then we got to the grapes he he said " Oh lots mom" I said how many? He replied 49. Well an older gentlemen was not too far from us, Adam left the cart and went over to the gentlemen and grabbed 6 bananas and said " Oo want 49 anas" (You want 49 bananas). He just looked at him, smiled and said "Do you think I'm a monkey? Adam said " Ya wight on!. He laughed of course and so did I.
