And yes, we did get snow...and it's never going to melt, I'm afraid :-D
I'm so sorry about your student and her children...that's such a sad situation. And CONGRATULATIONS (grandma?! you're too young!) on the new baby Grant!
OK....better run. I'm so far behind on everything, I'm never gonna catch up! laurie

Hi Everyone....I didnt mean to dissapear for two weeks but life has been crazy and hectic.
Chase has pneumonia!!! I have been home with him since last Thursday, never saw him so sick before. I guess we have just been lucky he has never had it before and is starting to show improvement finally with the medicine. I also became a grandma again...baby Grant came into the world after his mom had contractions for only an hour! How is that for a first time baby?!! He is cute and adorable and looks just like his dad! My son David however has asked if we would be interested in being a surrogate just for the next six months, seems they are having a hard time with this lack of sleep stuff :-)So I feel for you Annette and Chris!!! I so remember just six short years ago with Zach and how he had his nights mixed with days. Chase is thrilled wiht the new baby and as soon as I get the film developed (LOL for those of you who know my history with that) I promise to post pics.
Chase is getting a new special bike in April from an organization called ambucs...it is the coolest thing I have ever seen and the motorcycle club that raised the money and donated it to the ambucs are going to paint the bkies to look like harleys..LOLOL, how is that for awesome???
And lastly, for those of you who remember my student that had the baby and I got to cut his cord????.... she had another one and they were both just taken away. She gave me the oldest last week for a few days and I tried to fatten him up (it worked, he gained weight but not enough) but she just wasnt doing enough to keep them fed or clean and played with and the courts stepped in and took him and his baby sister away. She is devastated and I am angry. Angry with her for not trying harder, angy with the courts for giving him back after they took him for neglect the first time and angry that she can just keep having more babies. Eeekk, I am sorry, I dont mean to throw my views at you, and I know alot of people with disabilities CAN take care of their babies but I just keep seeing the ones that cant and have to watch these little babies suffer from neglect and abuse.
Oka, lets change the subject.....Laur...if you got any part of that disgusting nasty snow storm we had I dont want to live in Long Island but hey, I am with you about Hawaii...actually, I think maybe 12 months out of the year there may be really nice, I am just NOT cut out for the snow. I was thinking about it last night after coming home with DH from grocery shopping...we have here about 5 really really cold months and 2 more months of chilly weather, what am I doing living in this state????? I hate the cold!
My man Chase is asking for soup..this is a good sign so I better get it before he changes his mind.
Hugs to all and welcome to the new families. I see we have a new mom who is going to have a baby, Chris you will be such a great asset to her having just spent your pregnancy here and giving birth to sweet baby Emily!
Hugs, Robin

Thanks for the replies. Courtneys dr. did tell me she has really big tonsils. We may have to have them removed as well. Thanks again. It's nice to know others are dealing with some of the same issues.

Hi all,
I am kinda new to this message stuff. I just wanted to share with Valerie and sweet Courtney. Avery had severe sleep apnea as a baby and we were on oxygen for almost a year. Our Dr. had me watch his awake periods, to make sure he was really awake and not just groggy. She felt too much sleep during the day meant not enough oxygen to the brain at night, and a greater struggle to get the oxygen, while he was trying to sleep at night. I would watch him sit straight up and then reposition himself, and gasp for air, like he was startled. Just for info, I'm not medical, just a mom. The apnea can be caused by obstructions, such as tonsils, tongue... or central, caused by imaturity in the brain, something to that extent.Ask you Dr. We were reffered to a Pulmonologist(?) very early on.
Also, to the new moms to be, congrats on your future bundles of joy. Avery is our third baby, and has D.S. Millie is almost 9, Aiden is 7, and Avery will be 2. I would not have missed having Avery for anything. His brother and sister believe he was a present from God just for them. He lights up all of our worlds. He wakes up smiling and wraps his little arms around my neck and screams for his Aiden. There are days of challenge, but the rewards far out weigh the challenge. A baby is a baby, and they are all special in their own way.
Best to all,
chrisw

Hello everyone! We are from PA and it's been awhile since I posted on the board. I've been wondering if anyone else has a child with coloboma and DS? Noah celebrated his first birthday on Jan 12 and I can tell you that we couldn't be happier.
Margot... Noah is adopted and he is the joy of our world. We hope to one day adopt another child since our four other children are nearly all teenagers. I am so thrilled to be able to say we adopted a child with DS. It was a long wait for us, but it was worth it! I wish you the best!!!!

Hi my name is valerie. I have a dtr that turned 3y/o on Jan 22 with DS. I noticed alot of pictures of kids that are sitting up while sleeping. My dtr also does this. She is also very restless at night, almost like her airway is blocked a she jerks in her sleep to try to breath. I told this to her dr. and he wants to wait and see if she out grows it. I feel so bad for her to have to deal with that. Has anyone had this experience with there child?

Sheri, I'm not for sure I am thinking about the same test, but if its the blood test they take when you are four months , it has worried alot of my friends for no apparent reason. I have had three of my friends that had to go for special test because of that and their babies are just fine. I believe that if they don't test ya in the right week that it would turn up like that. I don't believe it is that accurate. Now, I have no medical training so I am just going by what my friends have told me. I am glad I didn't have that test though. I believe that if the amnio didn't show anything then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
Congratulations to the mother to be!
hugs,
Kristi

Hi!!!!

Adine... hello and welcome!!!! My daughter Olivia attended center-based therapy from 5 months till 3 years of age. At 3 she started in our school system in a clooaborative preschool setting. The entire preschool consisted of 60 students. 9 of which had differing special needs. Olivia was by far the most cognitively delayed but yet she fit right in. The 9 sp ed students were in their certain age group rooms with their teachers. The sp ed teacher would give them seperate time with her and she watched out for them but it was such a nice copllaboration of the sp ed and reg ed teachers. All the kids went with their various age groups and Olivia THRIVED. She learned quickly how to eat breakfast at the table with spectacular manners. Put her backpack away, her jacket on, go potty(she didn't quite make the potty training thing till after she was out of preschool but they gave her a great base to work with. ALL those ULTRA IMPORTANT issues like getting along with others sharing safety singing etc were taught to her there and reinforced by her sp ed teacher throughout the day. I dug it. It was the best choice for Oliuvia and by golly they still have a wall full of pictures up there . Funny thing you mentioned it cause out of the blue I decided to call up her AMAZING sp ed teacher she started with in preschool and we are all meeting for lunch next week.Olivia in her short 7 years attended a center based ei program for sp ed kids only from 5-18 months. They taught her on the computers sign language oral motor feeding specialists etc. THEN at 2 we moved and she went to an ei program that had about 4 typical kids and the other 7 were kids with varying disabilities. At 5 she attened a sp ed kindergarten which was awful and I kick myself daily for not seeing the signs and taking her out. The next year at 5 and 3/4 she went to our home school kindergarten(she repeated) and was fully included with an aide. In the afternoon she went to the sp ed teachers room for the rest of the day(she was to turn 6 soon and in california I know at 6 kids hafta have a full day of school. This year she is in the sp ed class for morning reading and math, yoga with the magnet 1st graders, and spends the afternoon and a bit of the morning with her pals from kinder last year who are in the first grade. EVERYTHING depends on the teacher EVERYTHING. COMMUNICATION between parents and all those who provide services to your child and their teachers is KEY. When you are all working on the same thing in the same way at the same time you wouldn't believe how fast your child will learn.Olivia is now reading and writing really well and doing a bit of math ... knows what she wants and knows how to behave in almost any setting(cept parades and Laker games TOO LOUD for her) She is an absolute motormouth. She has surpassed my wildest dreams of what she can achieve and blows my mind every day... Newest line is... (when II try to help her with something) NO MOM... I CAN DO IT MYSELF... Do your own thing... My baby is growing up. With help from others and communication with therapists and teachers and all being on the same page and sharing the same philosophies....you will find how GOOD people are and how very AMAZING your child can be!!! HUGS Steff

Welcome Adine !
Well, if you cross over to the bulletin board side of the site you can read past messages about EI & other topics as well as posting your ?'s
As far as EI I'll just start off by saying it depends on where you live but it's provided by the government from birth to 3 here in the US. Beyond that things can vary as far as what is offered & what you pay for as extras.

Hello everyone!
I am a fairly new internet user and this is my first time using a message board.
I found this web site today when I was looking up support for parents expecting a child with down's syndrome. I feel that I am more lucky than most because I know that my daughter has down's syndrome and can prepair myself for this as I await her birth. I am only 24 years old and thought that having a child with DS was pretty much impossable for me. I was given the tests because I gave birth to a son, Gryphon last year who passed away. No one knows why this happened. It seems very unlikely that having come from that situation my next child due exactly one year later would have DS. My husband and I are very excited about our daughter. We are so beyond ready to be parents that any disability is welcome! We want to be prepaired to give our child everything she needs in life. I know that one thing that she will need is an early intervention program but I do not know how to find one or if we will be able to afford the level of care we want to provide her with. I have worked in a pre school for five years and feel very strongly about trying to mainstream her with other children during her pre school years. Does any one have any information about this?

Hi!!!! Happy Birthday RHIENNE!!!! Ya know Kathleen I thought he was going to be older cause when I met him he was sooo tall. SHEESH.... I think I am the only one living in a time warp. All who had my yahoo addy I am gonna try to reinstall it on my puter. Jeff got it the first night. Uninstalled the whole thing.

Lemme start by saying hi and I thought I might start by giving an introduction cause we are getting more and more here every day!!! here goes
Just a quick intro . My name is steff from Los Angeles CA. I have 1 hubby and 2 kids and 1 ball python that I'm scared to death of.LOL. My daughter with ds is 7 years old and in the first grade. She's a pill and a love all wrapped nicely into 1... She's in the first grade is reading quite a bit now and a major motor mouth. She is learning so well its just her stubborn streak that gets in the way sometimes. But all in all man I, I mean ' we love her soooo much. She LOVES bears, dolls, tea parties, doctor kits, playing teacher.. LOL anything where she is in full control.Little sadistic with the doctor kit shot. Laughs when she gives me a shot and I say OWWWWWWW and she does it just a TAD too hard seeing if she can cross that line. I also have found that lately intstead of trying to fix things for her I am trying to teach her how to do for herself as well as standing up for herself. One boy in one of her classes is kinda intense and he kicks her under the table and yells etc. So LOL I told her thursday to tell him, this is a boy in her morning sp ed class," So and so Please stop kicking me NOW " It hurts me STOP NOW!!!" Never thought she would use it the next day even showed her how to do the BOSSY foot stomp when she said it to him. WELL her teacher and her aide said LOL I was soo impressed with how Olivia dealt with so and so today. And rambled off exactly what we practiced to say to him. APPARENTLY he stopped she kinda scared him for once cause she seemed to be very intimidated of him which for my girl its odd. ..oh yea last thing . Do youknow when boys who are acting cool do that head backwards head nod like they are too cool to say hi. WELL my 3rd grade son and his older pals always greet each other at school with the too cool head nod... Today I take Olivia to school and she is head nodding all the older boys and girls. It was hysterical even tried the tough face her bro has perfected with the nod. LMAO!!!! Gotta go but have a wonderful week.

My baby is 9!! How did that happen?? Waaaahhhh! I cannot believe he is that old. Long time no post. Havent been around in a little while - busy with this and that - but you know, eventually you have to check in at home. So how is everybody?? Rhienne is doing well - his speech continues to improve - he is talking in more and more 3 word sentences. That is HUGE for him. Using verbs and everything. Well, there is one phrase that I wish he would lose. He has taken to telling people, "I kick your butt." Mom is so proud. His other phrase is (when he is being reprimanded) "You talkin to me?" (sigh) Doesn't it just bring a tear of joy to your eye?

CC, no- it wasn't 2 am when I posted...I don't know why that happens w/ my posts? Man, thank goodness it wasn't. I was happily asleep at 2am. Not sure how much snow we got this weekend -- No where as much as they said...and it's so drifty it's hard to tell but probably 14" or so? Most of the schools around here are opened but Meghan's is closed....Hurrah!! And DH is off too so it's nice. Too bad it's not good snowman making snow. I've been promising the kids....
Kim NZ - try cropping the photo in a photo program (like Adobe photoshop)...it depends on photo size and pixel size but I can't figure out how to do it easily or explain it. I usually just crop and crop until I get one that fits. That's why there's a pic of Matthew without Meghan in the album. She wouldn't fit, LOL! Just make sure you SAVE the original under one name and make a second copy under a second name to crop. Otherwise you'll lose the original. If you don't have a good photo program you can download one for free off the net...I don't know the names of any offhand though.

Hi there, I am trying to send you all a picture of our son Jordan but it says it is "too high and too wide".....does anyone know how I alter it to fit in the unomas photo album??
I probably have the add that the real reason the album won't let me to add to it, is that Jordan is at the beach in a rock pool.....and it's a hot sunny day!!! I think it must be a USA or Canadian photo album and doesn't recognise sun and sea, only snow snow snow :)

Anyhow - holy freakin' cow...come here to see what's up and there's Robin...eeeeks I got a lot of reading to do, but it looks like things are good from what little I scanned. I have been hoping to see something from you for so long - I just remember the last post on the board from you and felt like we were left hangin' from a cliff. Glad to see you lady and hope you'll be around more. Everyone's been so great to me, but there are still a few that pounced on me when I was fresh meat that haven't shown there face in a while. I feel like you are all my family and I care about you all so much. Ok, I'm going to get tissues now...how long does it take to flush these hormones out anyway??? Love to you and Chase!!!

Hello Sharron,
I am Kim from New Zealand. I am always checking the "our story" section and found yours there this morning. I am so sorry to hear of the passing away of your sweet baby son Mathew, this must be a terrible time for you. I am thinking of you and your family at this time. Thank you for sharing with us of what a lovely child he was and the love and joy he has given you as a family. I would love to hear the words of the song that your friend wrote for Mathew.

Hi everyone,
I have noticed that sometimes people find it difficult to get through to message board. I think this is because you have to enter the "home" key for this particular part of Unos mas to see it.
I wanted to bring to all of our attention a message that has just come up in "your story" which may have been intended for message board. It is from a lady called Sharryn and she has just lost her baby boy.

It would also help those newbies to know their not the only ones in the boat:^)
I've been in FL for a week & half. I left at 50 deg. from PA, to have 75 deg days in FL & come back to 10 deg. & the threat of snow for days. OKAY here is my John-John story for FL...We were staying in a kitchenette at the hotel at Christian Retreat. We were down there at for a pastors conf.(this is to let you know who was in the hotel lobby).... I gave him a bath, washed him & let in play in the tub while I washed out 2 cups. Then I checked on John-John in the tub, who by the way was NOT in the tub. I look both ways out in the hall, no John-John. John, DH, shows up at the door to have me say John-John's gone. We start calling for him & hear someone saying they see him. He's on the stairs on the way to the lobby(our room was the closest room to the balcony that led to the lobby.) He only had 2 more stairs to make it to the lobby floor. So he was seen by all! I carried him up to the balcony, introduced him to all & told them what room he was in case he did it again. I'm sure you all know he did not stop for a towel after he got out of the tub.LOL
LAURIE.. I'm glad you did not mislead Robin about your weather:^) I think Hawaii might be a good place to move, but it is expensive to live there.
KimNZ.. I'd love to visit if that is your weather. The snow just started.
MICHELLE.. Is the Michelle who asked about "Skin Deep" the mom of Casey & Luke? I video taped that program just after John-John was born. I'll have to look for it as I never seem to label my tapes:o
BARB...How cool about the German Shepard standing still for Alison. I'd never have a Shepard as they seem to LOVE my blood! I've been bitten by 3 of them!!! Thank God the last 2 were minor:^)
On vacation someone who had worked with special needs kids told me that labs were great to work with our kids. She knew one that was trained not to let the child out the door. Boy could a few of us use that dog. (I breed English Springer Spanials) I wonder if I could teach the male(Beau) to do that for John-John??? It's a thought. John-John and Beau weigh the same.
One of our friends gave us a pack of 4 door alarms for Christmas. My DH just put the first one up on the bathroom door. I wonder how many times that is going to go off today? Now to catch up on the bulletin board.

Ummmm, Robin, it's supposed to snow tonight, did you hear? Sorry, I can't help myself.....YIPPPPEEEEEE! Getting up to a thermometer this morning that was stuck at zero was a little depressing. If it has to be cold I would at least like to be looking at a white ground. And seriously, this severe cold without snow is BAD for our perennials! They need an insulating layer. I worried that this severe cold without snow has killed some of mine.

Hey everyone ! Welcome to all the newbies ! And welcome back Robin Louise Esmerelda Lucretia Fiona Humble ! Greetings from happy but frozen Pittsburgh !
And, I do mean frozen. I have 2 cars that won't start out there in the driveway.
I loved the dognutz story! That says alot for his training. We have an elderly dog that's like that. All of our kids & anyone elses for that matter have been able to climb all over her without ever a growl.
I just have to post the latest on the princess. Yesterday morning she woke up & greeted me with "Mom ! I need tee (blankie) please!" We just all sort of stopped what we were doing & looked at each other & said, "Was that Merideth ?" She's such a holdout ! Usually we get those workds but not in a complete sentance. Also, last Fri she astounded her teacher by counting to 10 while counting out pretend coins with the Barbie cash regester at school, totally unprompted.
I gotta say buy those L&L tapes! She adores them!
Suzi
~oh & Robin, it gets a bit of snow, but I think I've found the perfect spot for all of us. HERSHEY, PA. Chocolate therapy when things get rough ! And good schools nearby !

Hi my name is sharen, this is all new to me, this is my first computer. I got custody of my son's son Jordan 2 years ago, Jordan is 5 now and has DS. We have had some pretty hard times, Jordan's mom did not take care of Jordan, and he was taken away from her. So he was already 3 years behind, plus alot of medical problems not taken care of.It really has been a challange the past 2 years, but now we have everything pretty well taken care of. Jordan is such a joy and very smart, he has improved so much it is unbelieveable. WEll now we are trying to potty train I was wondering if anyone could give us some tips. Also wondering if anyone has problems getting there children to eat different things, Jordan will only eat spagettio's or spagetti and meatballs , yogurt, a couple of TV dinners, he will not eat sandwiches or try anything different . Jordan will not eat cookies or cakes which probley isn't a bad thing.Sometimes I think I worry to much, Im sure most Children have bad eating habits.Well I hope Im doing this right, Im going to submit entry now so I guess I'll find out
