Steff,
Thanks for the encouragement!!! It is just so hard to be patient. She will probably do this just like she's done everything else......just get up one morning and decide that using the potty is what she wants to do!
Sorry to hear about the sinusitis. Hannah does that, too. She is having her tonsils and adenoids out on May 4th. Woo Hoo!! I'm not too concerned. After open heart surgery at 4 months, this will be a breeze!!

Hi!!!!!!

Karla... My girl Olivia was NOT fully potty trained till she was 5 years and 9 months old. AND she had no interest in the potty or asking to go. I really made a project of this the beginning of July before she was to be fully included in kinder. ONE solid week of us working diligently on how stinky diapers are and taking her to the potty all the time to try she got it. I'd saying having a FULL week to work on it helped soo much.

Olivia has sinusitis(sinus infection) so she is starting her antibiotics. YAY in a couple days the child will be able to go to school then camp. almost 3 weeks of being home is killing us both.L<OL BYE

Hello, all. I am new to this website. Just found it. Fabulous!! We are having a terrible time potting training!! Hannah is 5 and we've been working on it since she was 3. She is in school (early childhood and regular pre-k). She does pretty well while at school because of the schedule. She has never asked to go. She will occasionally go if I or one of her sisters(ages 12 and 10) take her with them when they go. We've tried M&M's(which she loves!), a timer, books, her own potty. I am out of ideas! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

The magnets are usually available on Ebay. The person who sells them (Evansdad), usually will post on the Bulletin Board when he has more available. I just checked Ebay and didn't see any. Maybe you could find Evansdad's e-mail address and ask him, or post a request on the Bulletin Board. I've ordered them a couple of times this way and he gets them out in the mail very quickly.

Welcome to the newbies !
Raquel~ I just wanted to let you know we went thru really similar circumstances last August. My daughter was scheduled for her heart surgery (they'd decided to wait till she was 3 to close her ASD), my dad had been sick for the past 10mths or so & was misdiagnosed. They wound up having heart surgeries a day apart in 2 different hospitals.Merideth came thru with flying colors but my dad had a bunch of complications & wound up being in for 8wks then going to a rehab facility. He finally came home right befor e Thanksgiving. Now, 3wks ago he had another surgery to implant a defribrulator.
~My daughter has done fantastically since, she seems to have went thru a growth spurt & a leap forward in her speech. She made it thru the winter w/o any sickness till the beginning of this month. For the past 3weeks we've been going thru the loop of ikky nose, cough, repeat.Hopefully the weather will change & she'll get over it quickly.

Hi Everyone, I regularly read your post. It's nice to touch base with people that are caring, loving parents of children with ds.
I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with a constant runny nose. My daughter turned 3 in Jan. Her runny nose has been going on all winter. She has been treated for several sinus infections and colds, but the nose never stops running. It goes back and forth from a clear discharge one day to yellow the next. Her doctor had me start Caritin 3 days ago and she currently has a yellow discharge. She started preK in Jan. and she is out more than she is there because of it. Other than the runny nose she is acting fine. Has anyone gone through this? Courtney hasn't had any major health problems.
Thanks for any helpful suggestions.

Hello everyone, this website ROCKS. I am 34 and my daughter Reina has DS is 19mos old.. and I am sooooo in love with her! She rocks my world.. Also in our home: Sirr-my 3 year-old son, My husband Juan and my 76yr-old aunt Tia. My daughter Reina at 6 wks of age was going through open heart surgery at St. Joseph's hospital while my father (who raised me as a single parent)was on life support...10 minutes away at Tampa General-from something called "sudden cardiac death" affecting 200,000 people a year. My dad died the following wednesday and my daughter was discharged that same day.(I believe Dad gave her her heart...may sound crazy but it helps me get through his dying) Two weeks later the cardiologists said we no longer had to visit them. I have been fighting depression not only post partum but grieving as well, for the last year and WOW I am finally begining the road to recovery. My strength...GOD and my daughter
I have ALWAYS been so positive about EVERYTHING always carrying the biggest smile known to mankind. And finally I meet up with a group of people here that think JUST like me. My Reina can feed herself(messy), help clean up, tickles herself, soaps herself in the bath, says 15 words in spanish and in english...plenty more that only I understand. She is standing on her own and taking 2 steps then falling on her bottom. She grunts and says mommy...when she needs to go #2-she hates it in her diaper. She has the best smile ever! Tonight during dinner she was eating and turned blue and couldn't breath...she was choking and I felt my world ending. I am a Dental Hygienist and must keep up with CPR every year.-but I lost it! I am so thankful my husband was there to keep it together. After several efforts he finally did a deep sweep in her throat and she got it down....I cried for about an hour with her in my arms...WHat would I do with out her? -I was scared to death. She is fine and when I was done holding her she went right back to trying to pull her brother's hair out. She made me laugh. She is so absolutely the most presious being in my entire world. I don't play favorite because I love my son Sirr. Yet Reina, there is just something so special about that little girl. I am the lucky one!

WELCOME to Uno Mas!!! So glad you found us. Please post up often.
I posted about this on the BB, but wanted to share that Emily and I are home from our LONG awaited trip to Washington DC with her Girl Scout troop. We had a blast!! I have posted (on the BB) a few of the TONS of pictures we took there. If you have never toured DC, I highly recommend it. You could be there for over a week and not come close to seeing it all!! One thing the troop was able to do is to attend the changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery, AND to lay a special wreath with their school's name on it in front of the tomb of the unkown soldier. It was a very touching ceremony indeed!!! Emily wasn't crazy about all the walking we had to do, but seemed to enjoy everything we saw. For me, the best part was the tour of the Capitol building and being in the room where the president gives those speeches and the democrats and republicans seem to "take turns" clapping and giving him a standing ovation. And the rotunda of the Capitol was just awesome. I believe that the highlight of the trip for Emily was one of the nights that the girls gathered to play cards and to do each other's hair and nails. She just LOVED that!!
If you have time, check out the pics.

You can also get containers with handles for kids to hold the box better and to keep them from squeezing. I think I've even seen them at dollar stores.

I was going to mention those little boxes. There are a couple companies that make them in 1/2 the normal size. It worked great to start with but let me tell you, I won't let Merideth near those now or she squeezes & creates a geyser all over! Rubbermaid also makes a little reusable plastic juicebox that is soft enough to be squeezable. Their cute ones~ the Cat & other animals however are a harder plastic.

Nicholas was also messy with the bottle, dribbled out the side of his mouth, but did rather well with sippy cups. As for the straw, we had tried without success a few times, and he finally learned how to use it when he was in the hospital for his heart surgery in Jan. All his meals came with those little juice boxes, and my husband worked with him and squeezed the box to get it started. I'm guessing it's the same principal as the honey bear. Worked for him, he's a pro with a straw now!

We had a hard time with bottles even being messy. So when we tried to switch from bottles to sippy cups, YIKES! I went to a Down Syndrome conference in Minneapolis on feeding and WhoHoo! We found what we needed.
The "thing" that helped us the most was the honey bear. You can order it from Talk Tools, or make your own. It is an empty honey bear container (the plastic bear shaped bottles honey comes in) and some safe for drinking tubing (like a fish tank would use). The tubing goes through the top of the "bear" and acts like a straw.
We were then able to help squeeze the bear, while our son was learning to suck on the "straw". He learned how to drink through a straw in a jiffy, but I really do think the smaller straw helped him learn how to control the "dribbling". He had to close his mouth all the way around the straw.
Bet that was a confusing description!

Mark -- Congratulations to you and your wife! I think you said very eloquently and simply what we all feel about our children, with Down Syndrome, typical, or otherwise!! We have fears and hopes, and all we can do is love them as best as we can each and every day!
Cole had AV canal surgery at 4 1/2 mos., and what a relief to have that over with! I'm sure you feel the same, and now you can get on with the business of playing, growing and living!! :)
Again, congratulations on being blessed with the special gift of your son! May he live a long and happy life, and bring much joy to those around him!

He is the sweetest little guy anyone could imagine. My biggest fear is being able to provide for Alex throughout his development and insuring he leads as fulfilling and complete life as possible. Down deep I know our love as parents will give us the strength to meet the challenges and appreciate the triumphs along the way

Hi Devorah - and welcome! Does your daughter see a speech therapist? What does she/he say? If you don't have one, get one...and ask the OT to help as well. Some of our kids have sensory problems that extend to foods and they sometimes need a little help. The OT and ST should be able to help you w/ exercises and other tips to help your daughter & encourage her to eat and try new textures. I have friends who have kids (w/ DS) and not only do they need to see a speech therapist but an oral-motor therapist (i think?) who specializes in feeding issues.
best of luck - laurie

I am not one of those moms because Adam is the most picky eater I ever seen. We had four children and I don't know if it is because he had to be on pureed food until he was 3 and did not really get to experience different taste, but boy he sure is picky on new taste and textures.

Hi. I have an adorable little girl with ds who just turned two (my first). Ever since she was a baby we are trying to get her to eat. She is a very picky eater and a very poor appetite. I am concerned that she is not eating enough-yet she refuses to let me feed her. (i am so surprised b/c all the articles say that children with ds love to eat...she is tiny and not growing much..just started her on synthroid)She has low tone in mouth( doesn't chew yet...just pureed food and cheerios)

Hi everyone: just my 2 cents w/r/t the sippy cup issue. We are also having sippie cup problems. Bethany gives it a good faith effort - but ends up with more on her bibs and clothes than in her mouth. I actually put a plastic and a terri cloth bib on together, just to try to keep her dry. Anyway - we had tried many different kinds - but my mom bought a Gerber one with handles and I think the holes may be a little smaller than the others b/c she does much better with that one (although still a lot of drippage). I don't know if there is an exact name for it - but it's a clear red with care bears all around it and the handles have rubber lines on them to make it easier to hold. We're still working on it - but, as I said this one is the best so far.
Susan: I read the other entries about Emily. She is really an inspiration. You must be so very proud and I wish you gus the best of luck in the future.
Barb: Hi there - sorry we missed you again this week at school - we are sick AGAIN!!!! Actually -the week b/f last I was sick - and now Bethany is sick again. Cross your fingers for us that we are all healthy this week and we'll see you and Alison in school! Hope I didn't miss anything too exciting!

Gosh girl, I am so excited for you and so glad you arent having any extra testing because I know first hand how dangerous it is:-(
I was going to say congratulations to the other mom who said she was pregnant but I have forgotten her name already (see what happens when you turn 40) but I cant wait to hear you are both doing great thruout your pregnancies. When are your due dates?

I am 41 and 6 months pregnant with my 2nd one. For Juliana, I had the nuchal fold test and the results were that my risk for having a baby with DS was increased by 2%. Her fold measured a little high, but it was still in the normal range. I decided not to have an amnio. I had a normal pregnancy, no problems at all, so we were quite shocked when we found out about the DS. It's just fine with me, she is an absolute angel and is doing so good.
Anyway, I had the nuchal fold test for this one and results actually decreased my risk by a huge amount. It put me in the same category as a 32-year-old woman.
This baby's fold is measuring 1/2 the size of Juliana's. My OB/GYN was quite pleased at the results,
and said that with results like that they wouldn't normally recommend an amnio, which I wouldn't have anyway.
So to get an idea, maybe you should consider the nuchal
fold test. At least, it could give you a heads up. But I don't think you'll have another baby with DS. I was so worried about it too in the beginning. Just have faith and think positive. GOOD LUCK!!!

We tried to get Mutual of Omaha on Russell when he was a little tyke when we were getting some for Regan also. They denied us. Then we were told from a fellow internet person to try Gerber Life. So when Reece was born I tried for Reece and Russell. They took Reece but said Russell had to be over a certain age also. Maybe it was 5, heck I don't remember. But Gerber WILL take them after a certain age... or so I am told.

My mom and I just met with Mutual Omaha for some insurance and medicare stuff for my mom and I talked to the agent about all of this. He said that Gerber was bought by Mutual Omaha and he did remember hearing stuff related to DS but didn't know for sure if they would cover him. He said he would check it out and let me know.... so we shall see what he says.

We were able to get life insurance for our son about 6 months ago. He just turned three. We too were denied at first because of DS. I wish I were more up to speed on the insurance jargon. We could only get the kind of policy that isn't worth money if you chose to cash it in....term? We got ours through Trivent, but we had to be kinda "pushy" about it, we made them resubmit the request quite a few times.

I recently tried to apply Malik for like insurance with Gerber Life and they rejected him becuase of his ds.They state they will not cover him until age 5. Is this for real? How can I get life insurance for him, God forbid if something was to happen to him, me and my husband are not able to afford it.

I know that some of my Uno friends really only hang out here, so I thought I should share my news here. Please forgive me for copying what I put on the BB, but I've got to get out of here and get Ethan to school. We are expecting an addition to our family! I think I may be a basket case for the next nine months, so please bear with me. I am 42 years old, and will be close to 43 when we deliver this baby, so of course I am concerned about having another with DS. After a lot of thought, Rod and I have decided to forgo testing unless our doctor finds real reason for concern about the pregnancy. I'll be honest, I'd really like to KNOW up front if this one has DS, only because our birth experience was so negative last time. We are unwilling to have an amnio because there is a risk to the baby, and we would not terminate a pregnancy for DS! So that limits our options in terms of knowing ahead of time.
I was really impacted by all the heartache that the prenatal testing brought to Jackie's niece. I've checked out lots of information on the various kinds of testing, including the nucal fold translucency, and it seems the results can be very ambiguous. I read lots of comments on a board where people had it performed, and so many of them turned out to have a very stressful and anxious pregnancy for nothing.
Sooooo, typical of me, I really want the answer, but am unwilling to pay the possible price to the baby. We are going to stick it out and pray a lot. I am curious to hear the experiences that others here have had with prenatal testing. I'm a bit of a basket case today, quite frankly. Prayers would be greatly appreciated. Laura

Nope, grapefruit juice....i think it's more applesauce than grapefruit but never tasted it myself, LOL! But the kids all seem to like it!! They also sometimes do applejuice w/ applesauce but not all the kids can have too much applejuice so they use something w/ less sugar, I guess?

Fran - we used to thin out yogurt (or you can buy those yogurt drinks)...just has to be the creamy kind. works well when learning to use a regular cup too because you can make it as thin or thick as you like. At meghan's school the teachers take grapefruit juice and thicken it with applesauce....yes it's more juice but they only give small cups of it to practice drinking out of a cup.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the sippy cup advice. I've been trying with diluted juice and she seems a bit more interested. She actually drank some last night, so I'm going to do the same now. I'm just worried about how much juice she can have. The doctors
are always saying to watch her weight, & I'm afraid of
getting her hooked on sweet things. I do water down the juice about 1/2 & 1/2. How much juice is okay? I'm thinking that watered down juice probably has less calories than milk, no? Really I just want to get her used to the cup. She won't drink plain water, forget that. So it's either juice or milk, right? I can't think of anything else. Thanks again for the advice.

Pat....can I hug you now? I dont usually go to the BB any more but someone told me to go read a thread and there was your post saying the nicest things about me and my Chaseman and the stories I used to post about him. I wish you were right here to give a big squeeze to!!!!I miss those days but I think the message board is the best place for me, less controversy here. Super big hugs to you for making me feel my Chase stories were okay. LOLOL, I cant wait to hear some John John stories. I sure we all lived closer because I think we would have each other in stitches telling stinker stories about our angels at the end of each day LOL!!!!And btw...dont you listen to Jello Jackie, her Justin is an angel!
Steff, I still remember the first time we met and Chase and Livvie were taking turns running away, it was so much fun to actually see a stinker for the first time besides Chase, TG he doesnt do that much any more and his limp noodle routine when he doesnt want to do anything is almost a thing of the past. (I probably shouldnt be saying that because it will start again, LOL) I'm gald to hear Chase isnt the only one that has a bad day when there is a sub. Chase seems to be targeting only one person these days at school to give grief too. The TC called me at work to see if there was something I thought they could try to help with his behaviors toward her that they might have missed. I think the whole problem is he hates paper and pencil work and he is one stubborn kid when he doesnt want to do something and she is the person responsible for making him do it. I am thinking we need less paper and pencil work and more hands on and computer work. LOLOL, Chase pulls the "I'm ignoring you" routine when he doesnt want to do something too, LOLOL, we even went so far as to get his hearing rechecked to make the school happy that he could really hear! I can just picture Livvie and Chase in a room together :-D
So Barb....does this mean you are doing the trip with us this summer????? Yeaaaaaa!!!!!
huggers, Robin

ROBIN, Thanks so much for the update on your future daughter-in-law!!! Geesh, I wonder if Susan was intending to share Emily's way awesome news with us?!? Just kidding Susan!!! I'm so happy to hear that Emily's teachers were in agreement with you on this one! I'm sure everything will work out beautifully for Emily since her teachers seemed very enthusiastic about this big change for her. Oh, BTW, Susan, here in the Buffalo area, 6th grade IS middle school!!!
~
Steff: Further proof that Liv and Alison have a lot of things in common! It's so funny that Liv will do the old "I can't hear you!" "I'm not listening!" looking around thing! Alison has taken to doing the same thing with her OT when they're trying to work on puzzles - especially if Alison has seen something else in Deb's bag that she really wants to get at! Now mind you, the kid has become pretty effecient with the puzzles that we have and will take them out on her own to play with, so it's not a case of she doesn't like to do them, just Alison being a little punk!!! She'll even go as far as pulling her shirt up over her face if she thinks it'll get her what she wants! Did I mention that she is definitely turning into a little punk? LOL
~
Fran: I too struggled with the bottle to cup issue. Tried to get Alison to start drinking from a cup at around 10 months or so. Talk about an exercise in frustration for both of us!!! She really wasn't ready yet. I started because Alison's OT recommended it. At the time, Alison wouldn't even hold her own bottle, so why I thought a cup would work I have NOOO clue! After about a month of loads of extra laundry and frustration, I backed off the cup. Somewhere around 18 months I tried again with the cup and ended up going to a sippy cup because she just didn't get the hang of not dumping the whole thing down the front of herself!!! I've been using a cup by Sassy that has a little snack holder thing built in and you're able to control the flow of whatever is in the cup. It's worked out really well for Alison. Just wish I would have tried this cup sooner - I think we have one of just about every sippy cup on the market! Oh the $$$ spent trying to find a bottle/nipple and now a cup that worked for this kiddo!!! I'd be able to pay for that Louisville trip ten times over I think!

Alright, gotta scoot. Meeting with my high-schoolers' guidance councelor, YUCK!!!

Thanks for all you comments about the skin. I have read the health page and Jacey has had a "echo" on her heart. She does have very low musxcle tone. It is what we noticed that had her tested for DS. Thanks again, Holly.

Robin!!!!! HIYA!!!! Subs always knock Liv for a loop but her sp ed teacher seems to have only male sp ed teacher subs and LIV DIGS on the men. Lemme tell you one of em is WWOWWWW...and of course Liv is a PERFECT ANGEL and she digs his stlye of teaching. He's also a musician and does lots with music unlike her sp ed teacher.(her teacher teaches the kids yoga she is really good at it you should see Liv do the FLAMINGO!!!!! and watch her giggle like mad as she loses her balance...)funny thing all the moms when hes there seem to pay MUCH MORE attention to their appearance.heehee kinda like all the moms always wanna go on the fire station field trip..lol...wow got sidetracked there.I'm telling you they are sounding soo alike.(chase and olivia although she would NEVER run away shes too close for comfort sometimes).

Ya wanna hear a funny. I am reading livs iep and in the behavioral /social skills section it lists areas of strength with Olivia... Loves to interact with peers and adults.loves to help others...etc etc etc really nice positive stuff then LOLOL... in the negatives for behaviors/social skills part it says When a task such as cutting or writing is involved when Olivia gets frustrated she will either ...a) pretend like she can't hear what anyone is saying by looking around...LOL
b) sticking the pencil close to her eye and looking to see if you notice like she wants you to.

That is sooo Olivia I cracked up when I read it last night I mean actually sat down and read it...no skimming they have my girl pegged and we have a beh plan so we can keep the tsa which are mighty hard to come by here in los angeles.

SUSAN..... who loves you we do!!!!! What does Emily have to say about all this??? What does she like? These are the times I wish I was an actual stinky nasty fly on the wall. Liv does her day split between sp ed and the first grade class and i struggled with that this year. Last year she was fully included in kindy then this? BUT!!! I am happy for this. In our school we have a reading system called open court. The kids are expected to sit for at least an hour and a half for all this info which I hate to say Liv wasn;t ready for and I could foresee HUGE BEHAVIOR problems. PLUS I really wanted to have her start learning to read and she is thru her tsa me jeff her bro and her very amazing sp ed teacher. The sp ed teacher has taught me a lot and I think she is learning a bit more regarding how Olivia learns.Shes got her reading a new book a week with about 3-5 new words in em a week.I think since she is the sp ed teacher she has the ability and time and patience to OVERTEACH which is what Liv needs. Hope you can figure this out at least somewhat. Your an awesome mom Susan..Its so hard fguring out sometimes...what to do... did we make the right choice... the I will never let that happen to my kids again..etc etc etc...WAAAAAA it never ends..LMAO just ask MY MOTHER!!!!!

HI!!!!

Fran had to clammer in on this one regarding bottles and cups. I tried Liv with the sippy cup, straws, cut out cups and even this really cool cutout sassy cup that only released tiny amounts of liquid cause liv would choke. The first week I was getting about 6-8 oz of anything in her a day till I just let popsicles rest in her mouth. She was NOT even near developmentally ready at that point for me to continue this discontinue bottle thing at 1 yr. SO she went back to her bottle. Her ped agreed with me wholeheartedly yet just had me switch my chubba lubba to 2%. About 2 and a half she lost the bottle. Ya know its funny cause she had kids her age with ds who always could drink soo well from cups etc but Liv did have a choking aspirating problem for a while there she still does when drinking clear liquids with too much gusto. She didn't master the straw till after 4 maybe almost 5 yet could tell you STRAW clear as day...LOL.. so all I'm trying to do is let you know the other side of the coin. I got myself frustrated as all get out over the bottle thing and finally Livs pt said ferrrgetaboutit she is NOT ready for this... You shoulda seen me helping her blow with straws and lol she didn't have the blowing thing down yet I guess I just tried and tried so hard thought I was such a bad mom cause a lotta people can try to make you feel like OHHHH they're drinking a bottle? How old are they??? UGGGG... but I got over that in about a week and when Liv gave me the sign she was ready she WAS!!!!ii\t just took a lot longer than we thought and were really worried bout the attachment thing to the bottle but we found new routines and she fell right into place..
