Ok Robin and Suzi praying really hard right now. Please let us know how things went.
Maria- is Bella still eating like a champ. That is just great news. A BIG WAY TO GO BELLA!!!!!!!
Cathy- are you guys ok or are you still in the crowning phase lol. Mine is back to work thank GOD! and yes I have been nice to him.
Becky-how is your little MR.Justin doing? mine is upstairs trashing his room as I type and singing. Yes he is suppose to be taking a nap but since the T/A and tubes that seems to be a thing of the past. They must have taken that part out with his tonsils lol. Please oh please one more week and he can have his cheese goldfish back I swear he is addicted to those things.
Well that is it for now must get ready for the kids, my car died on the way to pick up my nephew at preschool so my sister had to leave work to get him and drop him off boy I hope DH is in a good mood when he gets home from work because he has an alternator to put in before 5:30 Ashley has gymnastics.

Good morning Uno Mas!!!
~
Chase and Merideth are in my prayers this morning......Robin and Suzi, post up and let us know how the day went. Hugs to both of you. I know how stressful it will be for the moms!
~
HAPPY 8th birthday to Ricki!!! Sorry it's late. It sounds like she had a great party. Rickismom, I'm so glad you found Uno Mas. I know you'll love it here. I really enjoy hearing from parents of other "older" children. I do hope your school situation gets resolved soon.
~
ROBIN M: Good to hear from you! Sorry to hear Maggie has been sick. I smile every time I read about your coaching experiences.....I know there is no way I could do it. It wipes me out to stand on the sidelines CHEERING!
~
DEBORAH: I'll be happy to get tapes from the session with Libby Kumin if they are available. Do you receive the newsletters yet? They are really helpful! I can see Jennifer at preschool being the life of the party! I'm so glad she is loving it!
~
Ok...I'd better run or I'll be late for work! Have a great day everyone!

Hi everyone!
We're so busy that I have forgotten how to get here. Not really, but I had to think about it, which I never used to do!
Maggie's been sick. Croup, sinus, throat and now ear infections. Finally went in for a shot of antibiotics. She won't take her meds very well so I doubt she was getting enough to fight it off. The croup is better, just got to get the rest of it going.
Other than that, we had our Buddy Walk this past Sunday. It was fun. Never long enough. I can't ever get around to talk to everyone fast enough.
Soccer is keeping me busy and in shape! Hopefully I'll be back to some normalcy in November when this is over. Remind me NOT to do this next year! I'm getting too old for this.
Got to run. Been thinking about you all. Miss you guys.
Robin M

Susan I wanted to see your pics from the buddy walk, but I can't get them to open up!!! :(
I guess I will have to look at those little bitty ones for now! Since I cannot go to the conference, do me a favor and check to see if I can get a tape of Libby Kumin's workshop. That would be the next best thing.
Jennifer started an extra day of preschool this week. Now she goes 3 days. She is doing so well..and I was afraid she would not like it!! She is in a class of 6 and basically is "the leader". The teachers tell me she pretty much takes over circle time and if it weren't for her the kids wouldn't participate. She gets them motivated!! LOL. They want her to come 5 days.
Take care everyone
Deborah

Robin I'm still here lol. Just getting harder to keep up with Justin It seems as though they may have taken out his nap taking thingy. You know that thing that makes them take naps, well none since the surgery. I think they may have accidentally gave him some bionic tubes also, now he wakes up every morning at 5 when the alarm goes off for Chuck to go to work.
Maria-So glad to hear Bella is doing so well. BIG HUGS!!!!!!!
Michele- Justin just had his out on the 1st. He is doing great with the exception of some congestion-lovely Michigan weather lol. He stayed overnight in the PICU as a precaution for swelling but none. He did great. In the morning he walked out and waved and said BYE to all the residents standing around doing their rounds. He too had the runny nose but no fever or wheezing and they still did it. We will be praying for Kourtney tomorrow and you. I still balled when DH took him back to be sedated, I knew I wouldn't be able to, not enough kleenex in the OR. I'll be looking for her update.

Tomorrow is Meri's appt at Children's & I'm emotionally drained from rolling the scenerio around in my mind.
All prayers, good vibes, karma ,etc accepted.....Ideally I'm praying I hear the hole has closed & she won't require surgery.
After cardiology she sees audiology & then the DS clinic....it'll be a long day.

We celebrated Rickis eigth birthday this week. I invited several friends from her kindergarden last year (she's still not in school this year) and G-d bless them, they almost all came.
A picture of Ricki is in the photo album, number 24 Oct. '02
NEOLE, to get basis info on DS, go to a site like:
http://www.ndss.org
http:www.downsnet.org
If you want to know something real specific, you have to be more explicit.
MARIA, your discription of Bella eating reminded me so much of when Ricki had her PDA closed at age 3 monthes.LOL She went from eating 200 cc of fluid a day to bottles of 150cc or more every few hours. One of the doctors didn't want to discharge her because of her overeating, but the big-wig doctor laughed and said "L-rd, the kids starving, let her eat!"
JACKIE, I agree with Jackie about contact with special kids, but starting gradually. If she is all day in a "normal" environment,, contact with other special kids afte school will be helpfull for when she is older. But I think one DOES have to be carefull of where this contact is. For example, I let Rickie play with a neighbor girl who is older than Ricki who has CP (with retadation), at her house or at ours. This way Ricki can learn to accept friends who are special. But I don't send Ricki to an afternoon club for special girls run by high school volunteers, because I know that these high school girls will let Ricki act real strangs if she chooses to (like to get attention).
If you want her to have after-school friends (normal), YOU will have to lay the groundwork, inviting children, sending your daughter to scouts, etc.

Glad to see that Bella is home and eating good. It is amazing how much they do eat after thier heart gets fixed....Kourtney is going in TOMORROW for her surgery for the tonsils adnoids and tubes, she had developed a runny nose but no fever or wheezing so they are sure they can go ahead with the surgery. Speaking of photo album, I can't seem to put any pics in it now! I have no idea what is wrong. I have a few Buddy Walk pics I wanted to post, but it won't work. Is anyone else having this problem?
~
MARY L: It just seems like yesterday that Patrick was a baby in a cow costume for Halloween! Surely he can't be 3!!! I remember being terrified about Emily's first year with the public school system and being amazed that it went so well! Patrick will do fine, and I'll bet he'll love the bus. Hugs to his mom!

BECKY: (Justin's mom) Did Justin have his appointment yet for the follow up to the MRI? I've had him on my mind.....post up and let us know how it went.

MARIA: Your post about Bella was wonderful! I'm so so glad she is doing so well! Can't wait to see a picture of her!

OMG Mary! Say it isn't so. Patrick going to "big" school and riding the bus. What a sweetie. So what is his program like...you said things went well. Tell us more...you know I have only 6 months and we'll be in your spot. Does Patrick still love to pull hair? LOL Wonder how the school will deal with that? Its good to see you post.

My Patrick had a speech eval today. He tested out at 1 year, 7 months for receptive speech and 1 year, 6 months for expressive. I thought maybe I would feel bummed about this, but surprisingly I don't. I feel that its very accurate and maybe even a little better than I thought. I can clearly remember what my older son was doing in speech at 1 1/2 years and he was even a bit ahead of where Patrick is now at 2 1/2. The test was one of the easier ones (according to the ST), so maybe that helped the score. I think one reason I am not too depressed by this is that in the last week or two, Patrick has really been making some good progress and saying new words. So, I think things are coming along nicely. My older son has been learning some signing in school and we've had fun practicing the alphabet.

Opps...gotta run..its 12:39am and my neighbors car alarm keeps going off, apparently they are not home. Driving us nuts....

Hello everyone! Well we had Patrick's first IEP today and everything went really well. He is going to start school on Oct 15 - which I can't believe. It used to seem so far away and now it's here. My baby isn't a baby anymore! I had wanted to drive him to school but because of scheduling conflicts with my other kids he is going to take to bus. I am pretty nervous about this. He just seems too little to be taking a bus all by himself. I am sure everything will work out though.

Patrick's birthday is on Sunday but we're having his little friend party on Thur. with a Spongebob Squarepants theme. This kids just loves that show! He wants me to sing him the theme song a hundred times a day. It's a good thing that I kind of like it too.
We tried to take Patrick for a hearing test today and the kid freaked out. They had 2 speakers on the side with a box over each one. When they put on the light on the first box it had a clown playing a drum and Patrick got sooooo scared. He just turned around and put his arms around my neck and held on for dear life. I have never seen him so scared. Needless to say we couldn't complete the test and have to go back in a month to try it again.

Anyway~this has been a really stressful couple of weeks, with school evaluations, the Ds clinic, his ped visit, the IEP and the hearing test. Boy am I glad it's over!

I hope everyone has a great evening!

Mary L.

Maria~ It warms my heart to hear that your little Bella is doing so well. It's amazing what a little oxygen in the blood can do! Keep us posted on her marvelous gains in growth and development. My baby didn't start to take off until about three to four months after her surgery but now she has made up for lost time.
Sarah had tear duct surgery this morning. When I walked into the room where you wait for the nurses to take them into surgery I was overwhelmed with the feelings I had when she had her heart surgery. It caught me off guard since I wasn't worried about this surgery. I just remember so vividly the feelings I experienced when they took her out of my arms to take her into the operating room for her heart surgery. Geez! I'm getting teary eyed again!!! Anyway, her surgery this morning was a piece of cake. We checked in the hospital at 6 am and we were out by 8:45. She was totally back to normal by noon.
Robin~Hang in there. You are still in my thoughts and prayers!

Hi, all!!!! I just thoughtI'd give y'all an update on Bella. She is home! I brought her home on Friday. My poor little baby is no longer a poor little baby! OMG! She eats about every two hours. We are having trouble keeping up with her, now! She is eating rice cereal, carrots, bananas, pears, peaches, and I'm going to start her on squash today. She is taking 5 to 6 ozs of formula instead of 2 1/2 to 3. She is already GROWING! Man, she doesn't sleep all the way through the night, anymore. She wakes up once, at least, screaming for a bottle. Oh, and her lungs are working better than ever, now! All I can say is WOW! I can't believe this is my child! Oh, and those peaceful afternoon naps are no longer! She is all up in everything. Just taking it all in. Her incision is still hard to look at, it is kind of jagged. I know that over time, you won't even be able to see it, but still. Well, I just had to brag! She is doing so well, that it scares me. I'm so afraid that SOMETHING is going to go wrong, you know?
Well, Happy Birthday to everyone whose birthdays I've missed. I"m really bad about keeping up with stuff, especially since there has been so much for me to keep up with lately.
Hugs to Robin and her family. There are alot of people here in Texas praying for you.
Steff!! Where are you? I hope all is well with your bunch, and we are praying for you as well.
Welcome to all the new people. This is such a great sight. There is so much love and support here.
Well, got to run! I actually have some work to do today!!
Lots of love!

Happy Sunday to Everyone!!!
~
Well, yesterday was our very first Buddy Walk! We are always busy at this time of year with soccer and we've never been able to attend a walk. But this year, Jordan's soccer game got rained out so we decided late on Friday night to just head for Nashville to the Buddy Walk. It was pretty spur-of-the-moment, but we're so glad we went! There was a clown, face painting (which Emily has never liked!), the Tennessee Titan cheerleaders (who did a great job of cheering us on!), and Chris Burke who led the walk and later did a concert. We saw some families we had met before at conferences and met some new ones and saw some of the cutest kids on the planet!!!!! There were a LOT of babies and toddlers (talk about cute!!!) and a number of kids between 4-6years old, but not too many Emily's age. We all had a great time. We walked inside a large mall. At one point, I was busy talking to someone and when I looked up again I noticed that Emily (led by her brother!) were heading up the escalator! Emily said that was the BEST part of the whole walk! Terry took quite a few pictures and I'll post them later. It was a full day for us...after the walk, we did about 5 hours of shopping (searching for Halloween costumes and winter clothes and found NOTHING!) and then went to a Steven Curtis Chapman concert. I know...we went to see him a few weeks ago, but didn't get enough! We love him! Didn't get home till 1am.
~
I posted this on the BB, but thought I would add it here too. Patricia Oelwein is an author who has written books on how to teach reading and math skills to children with DS. I have the reading book and it's excellent! Well, I found out that she is doing a conference in Knoxville TN on Saturday October 19th. I'm going to call the Knoxville support group to get more info. Sounds good! Math is so hard for Emily, so I'm interested in hearing what she has to say!
~
The kids are now out of school for 2 weeks for their FALL BREAK. Before this year, Fall Break always consisted of a Friday and Monday off....this is the first year of a 2 week break. Should be fun!!!
~
See you all in chat tonight!

Morning:)

Just rolled out of bed and alas it is 8:30 a.m. That felt SOOOOOOOooooo good to sleep in;) Danny and I took the kids to the rodeo last night and had the best time laughing at the kids and not so much the antics of the performers(cowboys, clowns, animals). Lara, who most know is my sis and mentally challenged, belly laughed and danced at the music and had NO SHAME:)LOL The boys enjoyed the music as well as when the bulls went after the horses:) Could just imagine if one actual got a hold of the horse and did damage, they would have cried:)LOL Par for the course it FLOODED and we were walking around soaked from knees down and at least one shoulder wet while trying to share umbrellas:)All and all it was great:)

Most know I am in nursing school and people are being weeded out:(. The grade requirements are 75 or better or your out:( We have had 8 people drop do to inabilty to pass 1 final and we still have yet to complete 2 more in the next 2 weeks:( Some feel that is when they will get the axe:( Talk about somber moments while you wait to see who gets it:( I cried for those that didn't make it and was surprised that most in the class, minus the macho men;) did. The men felt it but just didn't show it.

We start working the hospital next week and hopefully we are all ready:)LOL Can you imagine:) Nurses without a clue:)LOL

Well hopefully this finds you all in good health, good spirits, and having a great day:) talk to ya soon:)

MARY ANN...your post rang my chimes. Emily is 22 now and she too was in regular ed most of her life. She is the youngest of 4 so her social life as she grew up was largely that of brother and sisters. She has, however, had a best friend for years. It is a girl she met in middle school who is LD. I often urge parents who are really into inclusion (as we were) not to forget to include friends with disabilities in their kids friendship circle. A time comes when typical kids move on...start developing cliques...doing what THEY want...not what their parents tell them to do ..including "being nice to so-and-so"...and sometimes our children with DS are left standing in the wings. Most of our kiddos participate in Special Olympics and that is an excellent place to develop on-going friendships. I know this doesnt take the place of playdates, etc. with non disabled kids but it does help fill the isolation void. One day I woke up and smelled the roses and realized that if Emily had some friends with disabilities it would not make her more disabled...in fact it would give her some friends who might not "outgrow" her and keep her from being so lonely. All through High School she had a mentor who from time to time thought to include her in activities connected with school...like being a Senior Spirit and decorating football players lockers...or going to get a burger and coke....but it wasnt a constant thing. However her best friend was who she REALLY enjoyed being with...They are still best buds and her friend works the registers now at McDonalds. Emily, herself, says she enjoys having friends both with and without disabilities. I notice in disability gatherings she does gravitate toward those who are more able. Debbie who posts here who has mosaic DS might be a good person to give some advice on helping you deal with this problem.

Hey MARYANN, WELCOME :-)

I was wondering, maybe your daughter could be the first to initiate the invite and ask one of her friends or a couple of the girls she really likes at school to come over to your house or maybe go to a movie or rollerskating or what ever your daughter really enjoys doing. How bout Brownies, Girl Scouts, I know they do lots of things as a group. Hmmm, you have a 4-H Club by you, that would be another good group for Meaghan to join with lots of group events. We live in New Jersey and they also have the Challenger League, softball team for special needs and a program called "Club Fun" which they do scoccer, bowling and also take trips to ice shows and such. Not sure if New York has that kind of thing or not. But if school is working out, I say stick with it and look for social stuff outside of school. Just my little humble opinion. What part of New York are you from??? We are headed up to Warwick tomorrow for the Apple Fest and some Apple picking. Any chance you might be there and you hear 2 adults screaming "CHRIS" bout every 2 mins. that would be us, LOLOL Looking forward to hearing more bout you and yours ;-)

Hi ...first time posting here. My daughter is 11, we live in NY. We are at a cross roads with her education right now. We have always included her in regular education - mostly successfully. I really wanted her to go to our neighborhood school with her brothers. Problem-Meaghan is a really friendly sweet little girl, but the social life is lacking. She wants desperately to be invited out to playdates, but no invitations ever get come. I'm wondering if she would be happier in a school with other kids who have special needs (she is the only child with DS in her school-most kids who are classified in her school are just LD). Has anyone experienced this?

...just had to brag and bring your attention to two new photos of Miss Zoë who was chosen by her teacher as student of the month at her school for "following directions and participating in class activities."
I'm so very proud of her!

Nikki,
All teeth if not properly cared for will deteriorate. Make sure to do your part and they will have a better chance of staying in great shape(of course you knew that;). BUT..... She will loss everyone of these only to be replaced by her permanent teeth. Stick to your game plan for her oral care and hopefully she will follow your pattern and so she can help maintain her teeth too as she ages.

RO

P.s. It is good to see you didnt float away with the last few storms that came your way:)

Oh my, I've been bad bad bad. It's been months since I've been here. HI SUZI!
Okay, I got a question about teeth. My daughter has gotten most of her teeth, and is in the process of cutting the rest. (all at once, shucks) Her teeth look great! I couldn't help noticeing that some people I see with DS have teeth that don't look so fantastic. I am hoping that her teeth stay beautiful like they are. Do I need to be worried? I may just be over reacting. Also Kayla is in the "typical" age bracket for everything but speech. In speech she is at about 18 months. She comprehends well, and picks up skills easily. I am wondering if speech is going to hold her back significantly.

Hi everyone... thank you so much for your kind words and prayers... DH is home... they never really found out what was wrong. The best they can figure... is that his Coumadin level was way too high.. and he has been doing a lot of heavy lifting... so he more than likely bruised himself internally. Well whatever... he is home... I am happy, the girls are happy and I NEED A VACATION!!!.

Robin... my friend, I would love to go to Atlanta with you... but.... just can't swing it so close to the Houston trip.. especially now that dh cannot lift the girls for a while..

Jackie... hugs to my little Justin boy. Give him a great big kiss from his girlfriend and her mom. And of course you better give Chuck a big hug from Katie too! Glad to hear Justin is doing so well...

Happy Birthday Radonna.... hope you had a wonderful day.

Susan... sewing???? LOL if you aren't suzy homemaker. Hugs to you...thanks for the chat last night!

Becky and Debi... thank you both for the chat too.. I really needed it. Hugs to you both!

Well gotta mosie... kids are making a racket... and dh is trying to rest up! Thanks again for all the prayers and thoughts!
