Tricia - I keep forgetting to respond to your post about playgroups!! I do work outside of the home and so do some of the other parents in our group. We usually meet on a Saturday. It's a very small group, made up of families w/kids of all ages. Sometimes we go to each other's house, usually around lunch time and we have lunch together and the kids all play in someone's back yard. Other times we have gone bowling (called the bowling alley ahead of time and told them about our playgroup and they reserved some lanes for us). We are planning a trip to the zoo in either Oct. or Nov. Sometimes we plan a "parent's night out" and just the mom's and dad's go out to eat someplace local. It's a real informal group.
Karen - I second that opinion about nurses. My boys were 26 weekers and spent 16 & 18 weeks in the NICU. Their primary nurses in the NICU were like surrogate Mom's to my boys and I will forever be grateful to them! They loved on them and took care of them when I couldn't be there. I really can't think of any field where you would work exclusively w/children w/DS other than I know here in Dallas Children's hospital has a DS clinic once a week. That is run thru their genetics dept. Good luck!

Sonja - My boys had tubes and adenoids removed when they were 2. It was done out patient in the hospital and their recovery was very quick! However, most kids, especially kids w/DS - under the age of 3 should NOT have their tonsils removed outpatient, and yes, the recovery can take quite a while and be very painful! My son's ENT is very conservative w/surgery and although their tonsils are enlarged, they aren't having problems w/them so he want's to wait as long as possible to remove them. He told me that he never likes to remove tonsils in any child under the age of 3 unless they are having severe problems because they can have a long recovery period. They can't be discharged until they are taking enough liquid to not deydrate and he has seen kids in the hospital up to a week because of this! You are a good friend to be getting this info for your friend! Good luck!

Connie - glad to hear you are back home!
Robin - you aren't whining! Besides, that's what we are here for!! I just wish I could reach thru my 'putor and give you a big ole hug! You and Chase are still in my thoughts and prayers - hang in there!!
Regarding Grandparent's names, My mother's mom was Nana or Nana Rose, my father's Mother was Grammy Kay, and my Grandfather was "Bumpa" Nick. That was my name for him. Couldn't quite get out "grandpa" and it came out "Bumpa" and it stuck! From what I've heard, it doesn't matter what *you* want to be called as a grandparent, the kid is going to probably come up w/something different!

I saw on the news at lunchtime that Lily is now a hurricane - and probably going to take the same path as the last storm - here's hoping it loses strength sparing all of you living on the gulf coast!! If not, get the plywood handy and I'll be hoping y'all are "high and dry"!!

My friend Kim's son has downs he is 3. He has had the open heart surgery. All of his life he has been plagued with cronic ear infections too. I suggested an ENT, to put tubes in my son had it done and the ear infections went away. Well this ENT suggest's he gets Tubes his tonsil's and adnoids out. He said the recoop time will be longer then the open heart surgery and that it will be very painfull. I think this is really excessive has this happend to anyones downs child out there too? Is it done often Tubes are one thing but all the rest too. I asked her to get a second oppinion. This child has been threw so much already. If anyone else has somthing similar please let me know? Thanks Sonja

Karen~It's wonderful that so many people have a special place in their hearts for our kids. Nurses have played such an important role in my baby's life. We had a home care nurse for several months after she was born and before and after heart surgery. The PICU nurses were excellent. They have lots of patients with DS because of the cardiac problems. We spend most of our time with an occupational therapist and a physical therapist. My child gets so much love from all the wonderful people who work with her. God bless you in your career choice.
~
Robin~My heart goes out to you right now. I will keep Chase and the rest of your family in my prayers. Congratualtions on the new grandson!!! I have wonderful grandparents. We have always called them Grannygirl and Pops. Special names for special people!

Hi to everyone out there. I a senior in nursing school and about to graduate. I have a passion to work with children with Downs syndrome because they are so special and beautiful and wanted to know from all of you with kids what kind of professional people help out your families. I want to get involved with Downs children, but dont exactly know what direction to go, so if any one has any ideas, please feel free to let me know.

ROBIN: Sorry I missed you in the wee hours of the morning! I woke up too (LOL those hot flashes will wake me up and keep me up for an hour or so!) and had a hard time going back to sleep. Would have much preferred to chat....with a BIG fan blowing on me! I just wanted to say that I have NEVER seen your posts (or emails or phone calls) as whining....never! You have legitimate concerns for your son right now, and talking about them to friends is never whining! I just wish there was some way for us to help. I still believe that there must be something stressing Chase out at Guardian Angel, cause his worst incidents sound like they occur there. Seems like if you only knew what it was that upset him there, you could get the staff to "FIX" that and it would be much easier on everyone! Like his teacher said, perhaps it is that they lack the structure that Chase simply has to have. And, if the new meds don't begin to work better in the next few weeks, maybe this new doc will change them and you'll see improvements. Please don't ever hesitate to talk to us about what's going on. I've had very few behavior problems with Emily so far, BUT my other 3 have certainly given me plenty of gray hairs and sleepless nights. The oldest one has shown me that I sure don't have the answers on how to raise children. I'm doing exactly what you're doing.....taking it one day at a time, loving my kids, and trying to do the best I can do. Cyber hugs to you and the whole family!!!!

A snuggle and a kiss to baby Tyler from all of us here (just give him one more tiny extra kiss, he probably won't mind) and a hug to Chase , also from all of us~~~~~~we hope this is a good day

I dont know whether to say evening or morning to you..it is now 3:00 am and I woke up not able to get back to sleep. I hate when that happens, the weight of the world is on your shoulders, you know what I mean???
I thank you all for the suggestions for grandma names and I think I like Jackie's the best..grandma Robin. plain and simple, speaking fo grandma...we are leaving here at 9 to go visit tyler and his family..I cant wait to snuggle up again with him. Pray Chase is good for us please. We had another episode of him " going off" at guardain angel again yesterday, only the third time he has been back in a month. But one of th aide there said she was able to handle it and got him de-escalated before they had to call in for back up. Please forgive me for the whining and depressing thoughts I share...I am just lost and dont know where to turn right now, I was blaming this on God giving me more then I could handle and my friend Susan reminded me that God deosnt give us more then we can handle, that there is also the devil..... and he himself must surely be having a GRAND OLD TIME right now trying to destroy my family.
God give me strenght.
:Love and hugs to you all, have a wonderful Sunday,
Robin

Hi all, I was laughing over all the grandparents names & had to join in. My grandfather took the name my older brother gave him... "goompa"... which later just turned to "gooba". Yes there was embarassament in those teen years !!

When Connor was born I told my dad... "now you are a gooba, too". LOL Well... he didn't welcome the name as much !!! And since he was a volunteer coach at the time... that is the name he has... Coach.

Hi all! It's been so long since I've been on. No way to read enough to catch up, but just know I'm thinking of all you all and hope the best for you.
Maggie's doing great! Scooting around on her bottom getting into everything. I'm thinging walking may not be a good thing to strive for!
We go this week to UVA to see the developmental doc. Never been to see this doc before. Should be interesting.
Soccer is consuming my life! Who would have thought that coaching 6 to 8 year olds would be so stressful. Okay, maybe I take it a little too seriously, but I'm trying to concentrate on the fun. I enjoy coaching, but I'm thinking that I'll be glad when it's all done.
Robin - I've got a name you're gonna relate to - LOL like you don't already! "RaRa"!!! My nephew started calling me that when he was a baby and now my grandaughter is calling me "RaRa". It's easy and close to my name so it works. Trust me, you'll know when you find the right name. It's fit like your favorite pair of shoes.
I'm off again. I'll try to join you all in chat tomorrow. I miss it.
Take care. Robin M

A note to the wise about grandparent names....My grandparents all had unusual names when I was growing up....Mimi and Bompie....and Mommadot and Snazzy. LOL...As I got older I was always somewhat embarassed to use their names around my friends...especially in my middle school years when I was sensitve about...EVERYTHING....LOL....and I always envied my friends who had grandparents with simple more mainstream names like...Granny...and Grandad....Of course now that I am older and they are long gone...I am sorry I ever really felt that way...they were four wonderful and magical grandparents...and I loved and miss them very much....Their names sort of described them....and they were obviously happy with them.

My mom is known as "Gramma Dianna" or "Gramma", her mom is "Gramma DeVoss" or "Great-Gramma", and my dad's mom is "Nanny". Otherwise we wouldn't know which gramma was which! My girlies lost their last Grampa this month, but he was just "Grampa" since he was the only one.
Which reminds me...tell your husbands, fathers, brother, sons, etc. that if they feel pain, whether it is a "symptom" of a heart attack or not, to go to a doctor! Any unexplained pain should be checked out. period. Especially difficulty breathing, which could be part of a heart attack, but is serious even by itself.
Thanks for spreading the word to the men in your lives!

Robin: Congratulations to you on the birth of that grandbaby!!! Let's see, I had a Granny and a Big Mama! My cousin had a Nana. Don't guess you are up for either of those. How about GiGi? That's what my girlfriend's kids call her mom.

Judi: Wow....my head is spinning just thinking of all you are doing. Loved your long post. I have a ? You mentioned you have a playgroup. We just started one here in May, meeting the 3rd Friday of each month at noon. I know you work, so my question is, when and how often does your group meet? What ages attend? I am contemplating adding a second date each month for parents that can't meet the current meeting. Where do you guys meet? Thanks for any input.

Connie - I just read about Collin! Glad to hear he's feeling better. He'll be in my prayers until he's home safely in your arms!

Robin - Congrat's Grandma!! My neices and nephews call my mom "Marmo". It's gaelic for grandma.

Oh - and while I'm at it - (I can't BELIEVE I forgot to mention this in my MONSTER post below - hee hee!)
I'm now selling the 2003 "Field of Dreams" Calendar for the Dallas Down Syndrome Guild!! The "theme" for this calendar is "What I want to be when I grow up". There are pictures of Clowns, Ballerina's, Farmers, Pilots, Chef's, Artists, A plumber (you really have got to see this picture - it's priceless!) and of course, representing the month of April - the CUTEST little twin strawberry blonde Cowboys you have ever seen (I'm not too biased, am I?).

For those who are interested, they are $13.00 each and as a special for my internet friends, I'll pick up the shipping charges (they said we should charge $4.50, but I found a cheap way to send them). Drop me an email (judig2@yahoo.com) and I'll send you the particulars.

I must say, this is the BEST calendar our group has ever put out (and I'm not just saying that because I have to - hee hee!). Remember - these make great gifts for teachers, therapists, family members, etc.

OK - Sales pitch is over - Gonna go try to catch up on posts!

Howdy y'all!!! I know I haven't posted in a while, but I do try to read on a daily basis, but even that has fallen thru the cracks These past few weeks! . This month it's been a little harder to find some free time to do surf the net at work (shhh, don’t tell on me!). Work is busy, busy, busy!!!

To all the new members here – I’m Judi, Mom to Sam & Patrick, 5 ˝ Year old identical twins w/DS (yep, both of ‘em!).

My punkin' Patrick has been sick! I was home Monday w/him. He woke up at 3am Monday morning doing that gawd-awful "stridor" breathing. Brought him to the doc and he has croup! He's not doing the "barking
seal" cough and the stridor pretty much goes away if he's in an upright position. Got him on orapred and histussin. Along w/the vaporizor and a pillow under his mattress to raise his head he got a pretty good night's sleep so I packed him off to school today.

He and I had a pretty productive day – his Ped. Is near NorthPark Mall (a hoity-toity mall in No. Dallas). So, we did a little shopping (not that I shop in the hoity-toity stores – I got some bargains on
the sale racks at Gap and Gymboree), and he rode the little choo-choo train ride that they have. I picked up a little blue and white striped "engineer's cap" (on sale for $3.00!) at Gap. He looked so cute going round and round on the train!! Next we stopped at the
pharmacy, got his prescriptions filled, had some lunch then went up to my FIL's office to drop him off a couple of calendar's. He makes soap and cleaning compounds. He has this HUGE warehouse. He took
Patrick for a ride on the forklift – even let Patrick steer! I was so wishing I had my camera!! Then we went to Party City and I got him an Sam their halloween costumes – Bob the Builder and Blue (from Blues'
Clues) (1/2 price this week – woo hoo!). Then, last but not least, we picked Sam up from daycare. Poor Sam – had to go to school – alone. But, me and Patrick had a fun day together. I'll have to plan a day
alone w/Sam soon!!

So then he was fine Tuesday, but yesterday I got a call from the school nurse to come get him – he had 4 blow-out diarrhea's in a row!! Poor punkin!! I was majorly concerned he had rotavirus – again! Ugh!! Kept him on a bland diet of diet sprite and crackers and he was fine. Mike's home w/him today though just to make sure. It just about broke my heart putting Sam on the bus this morning. He kept turning around yelling "Bye – B" (they call each other "B" – don't
ask me why!). Patrick was standing in the living room window waving furiously and crying!!! Please keep your fingers crossed that Sam doesn't get sick (until after October 1st – then work will calm down!! ).

We had our Buddy walk on Saturday. What a gorgeous day! It was held at a Park in Rowlett (suburb of Dallas). My cousin and her family joined me and the boys (Mike had tickets to a football game in
College Station) and we joined some other families from our local playgroup. A City of Rowlett Fire truck lead the everybody to the beginning of the walking trail. We walked on a gorgeous tree lined (and shaded!) walking trail. At the "finish line" members of a local girl scout troop handed out little "gold medals" that said "winner" on red/white/blue ribbons. All the little kids were thrilled to be wearing their own "gold medal". I don't know how many people attended – but there was a LOT! We raised over $20,000!!! . And – the coolest thing was I got to meet Maria – Bella’s Mom! It was so crowded and crazy there I didn’t have much time to chat, but hopefully she’ll come to some of our playgroups so we can “socialize” more!

Afterwards, there were hotdogs, popcorn, drinks,
clowns, balloons, face painting, and bounce houses for the kids to play in. They also had a representative from the Rowlett Police Dept. finger-printing kids for "child find" (missing kid stuff). It really
was a great day and a lot of fun!

The month of October is going to be busy, busy busy for me. I think I have something going on almost every weekend. Did I tell you all I'm going to be an Auntie in December (the 25th to be exact). My BIL & SIL found out they are having a little girl! There aren't that many girls in the Grossman family (and I only have 1 neice on my side). My SIL's baby shower is Oct. 5th in Houston. I'm flying down and back the same day (thank goodness for Southwest Airlines – cheap flights!). I had a blast over the weekend buying pink frilly girly
things!! I'm excited to have a new baby girl to spoil!!

Then on the 12th a bunch of us Texan's from some other DS bb’s are meeting up in Waco for a visit.. Gonna meet up w/them and some other mom's I've recently met on-line for an afternoon at the Waco Zoo. Looking forward to that very much!!

The 19th I'm doing the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. This will be my 11th year. I dear, dear friend of mine was diagnosed w/breast cancer shortly after I moved to Texas. Being so far away and wanting to do "something" I started walking in the race for her. Sadly, in June of '96 (about the time I discovered I was preggo – I've always considered her to be their special angel in heaven) she lost her battle. In the interim, Mike's step-mom, another friend of mine and then last year Mike's Mom were all diagnosed. Last year me, Mike and the boys all walked as a family.

On top of all of this w/interest rates on mortgage's the way they currently are – Mike has decided that we need to sell our house and buy another one. However, we need some MAJOR repairs and updating before we can even think about this. There just doesn't seem to be
enough hours in the day - Calgon – take me away!!!

Well, it's the end of the fiscal year (Sept.30th) for the Gov't so I am busy spending, spending, spending your tax dollars! Gotta run and do some more work (sigh). October 1 can't come fast enough!!!

Well – this post turned out way longer than I intended - I feel like "Queen Poster Shawna!

HI ALL!!!!!

COLLIN CONNIE and MIKE...(((HUGS)))) and prayers going your way!!!How's he doing???

GRANNY!!!!! That's my favorite!!!!Congrats!!!! Black hair how I long to see a black haired baby in our family.....All our babies have bald head with white fuzzy stuff that ya can't even see. I LOVE DARK HAIR!!!!

Well... Let's see here... Olivia is doing really well at school. She's only had one accident. The teacher seems to think she did it on purpose cause she didn't wanna come off the playground.. LOL... She called Liv in..Liv said NO called again.. Then stood there and peed while she gave the teacher the EVIL EYE!!!!OOPS!!!Otherwise she is doing fantastic with the potty training. I can't wait for diaperless times.:)She only wears em at night now. Also when I am spelling her name I can point to the letters and she will tell me what they are...I'm very happy bout that. Like i said before her fine motor stuff is WAY behind but it is coming very slowly BUT it is coming...I hafta get one of those rubber things you can put on pencils to make it easier for her to hold.I think that will help a bit. She still doesn't like LOOKING at the paper when she is writing.LOL...She look for a sec then look away as she draws..:)She'll get it eventually just needs time. She loves one boy in the class and the one kid she doesn't like ironically has ds. LOL.. She runs from him...I dunno what that is all about. He isn't verbal and likes to grab her glasses and I think that really BUGS her out.AND can I say she looks sooo cute in her school uniform> Those plaid skorts are sooo cute on her. So that is that in a nutshell not much to report here but hope this note finds you all happy and healthy!!!!

ROBIN: Are you spelling it "GRANNY"? Or "GRANNIE"? LOL I keep hearing kids around here calling their grandmothers "MeeMaw"......has a nice ring to it huh? Congratulations to the new parents and to you! Can't wait to see pics of the little guy. I love his name!
~
Well, yesterday I did something that I probably should have done several years ago. I signed Emily up for Girl Scouts, and I think she is going to LOVE it! The troop used to meet at 3pm once a week, and that was a really hard time for me since I work......I sort of thought it would be good if I went to the meetings with her. But they have recently changed to 5:30 every OTHER Tuesday which is way better. And....the leader informed me that they really didn't need me! Next Tuesday evening is a little ceremony and Emily needs to memorize the Girl Scout Promise. ("On my honor, I will try to serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law"). Yikes....we'll see! She had such fun at the meeting yesterday. There are about 10 girls in the troop, and most of them are girls she has known since kindergarten. October 12th is their first overnight camp out!!! I'm hoping this will be a good thing for her. This weekend, I'll be shopping for a uniform.
~
Please continue to remember my mom in prayer...she is finally getting to start chemo tomorrow, as well as radiation. She's a bit worried about it all, of course.
~
I hope to see you all in chat tomorrow night!

No, one doesn't get used to the prejudice. One of the reasons we're having so much trouble finding a class for Ricki is that most of the classes here are too big (40 pupils). Two smaller classes that would have been good are in an area were the ethnic group would not be as ours-and the principal warned me that Ricki would run into double trouble- both for being Down and for being the only "European" in the school. So that leaves us with only a few other possibilities, who are not too keen on inclusion. But I neally didn't feel it would be fair for Ricki to have to battle two labels, so I'm pushing for the last possibilities.( (And I'm also FAR from being prejudiciced; my x-husband war VERY dark-skinned.)
How to prepare siblings? For minor stares, I told Ricki's older brother to quip "It costs $2 to watch" (LOLLOL) , and we've found that this helps a lot. When a neighborhood girl made fun of Ricki when she was with one of her siblings, I FIRST waited a half day (until the steam stopped pouring from my ears), until I could stay calm, then I went to talk to the offender's mother. I took the tack of telling the mother how I am sure she would never dream of her daughter doing this, that obviously she wouldn't condone such behavior, so I'm doing her a favor by telling her what happened, so she can speak with and teach her daughter. This also worked well.
With the real cruel strangers, I just tell my kids that unfortunately, there are a lot of nasty people in the world, and we have to: 1)feel sorry for them and 2) AVOID them!

Hello, All!
Connie- It is good to hear Collin is doing well. I have been praying for you guys. He sounds like he's in real good hands.
Robin- Congrats on the grandbaby! He sounds like such a cutie! Can't wait to see pics! Poor Chaseman, being sick is no fun. Kisses and hugs for the little man.
Michele- You go girl! I don't think I would have handled your situation any different. Being a mom is a tough job but someone has to do it. Especially when your baby is being picked on. It worries me to think of Bella being picked on. She doesn't have anyone to defend her. Her older sis is 13 now, so she will be in high school by the time Bella starts school. ugh, I don't want to think about it.
Steff- I'm glad to hear things are well for you and your family. The after school program that Olivia is in sounds so awesome. I hope that we have something like that available for Bella when she is older.
Well, I am about to go nuts!! The anticipation of Bella's surgery is getting to me. I have so many people asking so many questions, and I don't have any answers for them, yet. Friday is pre-op, and it is supposed to be an all day thing. Paperwork, bloodwork, a long talk with the surgeon........ Dh is going to go with us, so it won't be as stressful. I couldn't believe my ears when he told me he was going. I think it is time for a night out. Someone send some Jello shots my way!>:)
Hugs to you all!
Maria
