MOST PEOPLE HAVE 46 CHROMOSOMES Most folks have pairs of 23 different chromosomes. One set from your Mom; One set from your Dad. Let's do some simple math: 23 chromosomes from Mom 23 chromosomes from Dad _________________ = 46 Chromosomes People with Down Syndrome somehow ended up with one extra #21 chromosome! (+ ONE MORE, or uh, "uno mas"... Why, why? We're not sure Why?) + 1 _________________ 47 Chromosomes. Strange but true! And wildly unique, don't you think? How 'bout a little graphic to illustrate? A picture is worth a thousand words, they say. So let's have a look at Casey's chromosomes, shall we? See? Three #21 chromosomes! And, hey, don't they remind you of chili peppers? Undeniably reminiscent of chili peppers, don't you think? You'll never look at chromosomes the same way again. Well, there ya go. End of lesson. That is as deep into the genetics of Down Syndrome as I'm going to get.   This explanation stinks, I need a more precise definition
